So our family has two cars. A '94ish ford exploder, and a 98ish Lexus Gs300 (i don't know the exact year).

We've had both cars for like maybe 4-5 years and it seems that our Ford has had much less maintenance requierd than our Lexus.

Hell, our lexus doesn't even start anymore!

a ford exploder lasts longer than a lexus. interesting.

Being an agoraphobic adrenaline junkie would be pretty convenient, because you could get your rush from just going to the store to get some milk instead of having to jump off a mountain or out of an airplane.

Man survives crash after cruise control jams on Eastern Freeway

THE driver of a runaway car stuck on cruise control hurtling along Melbourne's Eastern Freeway at 100km/h said last night he was convinced he was going to die.

Travelling on the wrong side of the road and hysterical, Chase Weir, 22, found himself racing toward a wall of cars when a frantic police radio operator ordered him to slam on the brakes.

"She told me to jump on the brake and pull the handbrake at the same time, which I did,'' a still shaken Mr Weir said.

"I just shut my eyes. I could hear the tyres skidding on the road for what seemed like forever. I thought I was dead.

"When I opened my eyes, I was bonnet to bonnet with the car in front of me."

Mr Weir's 30-minute ordeal began about 12.40pm while travelling in the outbound lane of the Eastern Freeway on his way to Greensborough. After moving to take the Burke Rd exit, he realised the cruise control in his 2002 Ford Explorer was stuck and his car was unable to slow down.
He was told there were police cars in front of him and more arriving to help stop his car. Other police cars provided an escort and assisted in clearing the way along Eastlink, as 000 operators contacted Ford to try to find a solution.

The car was moved over to left lanes as police lights and sirens cleared a path.

Mr Weir told police he tried to brake, knock the car out of gear and remove the keys, all to no avail.

The car finally came off the freeway at Frankston and continued through the Cranbourne Rd intersection on to the Moorooduc Highway.

But the terrifying scenario got worse, as Mr Weir encountered banked-up traffic near the Monash University Peninsula Campus and was forced to cross over the road into oncoming traffic.

In a frantic attempt to avoid a collision he jumped up and down on the brakes and pulled on the handbrake.

The car finally stopped on the wrong side of the road, just over the railway line about 1.10pm.

An ambulance took Mr Weir to hospital suffering from shock.

Ford says it is unaware of issues with the Explorer's cruise control. A Ford spokeswoman said the company had been informed of the incident late this afternoon but had never heard of a similar incident before.

"We are pleased that the driver or other road users were not injured as a result of the incident, but it is not an issue we have encountered before," communications manager Sinead McAlary said in a statement.

"We will be making contact with the driver/owner of the vehicle ASAP to learn more about what took place and get access to his vehicle to investigate it further."

OK…I'll admit that I'm a pretty smart guy,but it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to come up with my first though as I read that story…

Why wouldn't one turn the keyswitch to the off position?

No doubt. The only possible problem with turning the engine off is you will also lock the steering column. But and off and on again would be the thing to do.

Or just step on the damn brakes. Its an explorer for cripes sakes. The brakes with overpower the engine just fine. They should have just clear the way and let him drive off into the outback.

Um, only if you turn it all the way off. If you just turn the key to the ACC (accessory) position, you can steer.

Wait, but I thought imports were always better than domestics no matter what.

It's pretty hard to compare used vehicles though, your explorer could have been well taken care of by its previous owner(s) and your Lexus could have been leased by someone who drove it like a douchebag and never did any maintenance because they just didn't care.

What are the histories of the two cars?

The lexus definitely has a lower milage, but I haven't checked the exact numbers. The car has been in pretty good condition over the years, and it showed signs that the original owner took fairly good care of it.

I'm not bashing on Lexus - they make really good cars and they clearly pay a lot of attention to detail in their quality and design.

Whereas, the ford seems like it was engineered by a teenage kid who whose background was in building shopping go karts, but for some reason, for my case, the car has held up really well over the years with minor maintenance.

But my point is, I see a lot of people bashing on fords and such, but in reality, all cars have their own problems.

I've got 350,000km's on my 2000 Explorer Sport - been a good reliable vehicle. Heck my 2007 subaru goes through more oil than the exploder…

I know after they went from the OHV 4.0L to the SOHC 4.0L there were quite a few less problems. Lots of similar parts to the Ford Ranger family, but yeah good vehicles.
