I was always under the impression H1N1 was the most common cause for the Flu in humans…

my office has had seasonal flu shots available for lawyers and staff every year.

We get them for free as well. Working on medical instruments is a risk factor for infection so says the owner. This year we get regular flue and H1N1 along with Hep, Tetanus and more. He covers it all. It's kinda like wearing a hard hat we don't get a choice. OK we have a choice, the front door is not locked from the inside.

I wonder how they determine what the most prevalent virus type was in 1889? They had a pretty hard time sequencing the 1918 flu, and could only do so because they found frozen bodies buried underground. Interesting.

Perhaps rough assumptions based on where/when contraction? Beyond me.

This makes me a lot more nervous than H1N1

H5N1 flu, first identified as a threat to humans in Hong Kong in 1997, spreads from Asia around the world, apparently carried by wild birds. While this "bird flu" proves deadly to humans, killing more than half of its victims, it is kept in check by its inability to spread readily from human to human. H5N1 is also found in pigs in Indonesia, raising fears that it might reassort with other human flu viruses that pigs can harbour.

And you also read that Indonesia refuses to provide samples from any of their flu strains for sequencing due to the capitalistic nature of the west.. maybe something else is coming.

Outbreak was on TV the other night.

Apparently being a hockey player puts you at a high risk of getting H1N1. I hope they feel good when some young kid dies because of their selfishness.

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) - B.C.'s Chief Public Health Officer can't say how much queue-jumping is going on with the H1N1 vaccine, but Dr. Perry Kendall insists that athletes shouldn't be getting priority over at-risk patients.

Dr. Kendall was asked how players on the Abbotsford Heat hockey club were able to get vaccinated last night, despite long-lines and short supply, and he points out there is no policy which allows professional or amateur athletes priority over anyone else. "There has been no authorization given by me, or any of British Columbia's medical officers or health authorities."
The Abbotsford hockey club insists its players are at a high-risk of becoming infected, because of the large amount of travelling they do. Kendall says he will speak with the doctor who administered the shots, to remind him of the current public policy. Abbotsford's parent team-the Calgary Flames-has been harshly criticized by people in Calgary after it was learned Flames players had received shots ahead of the general public.

B.C. Lions Coach and General Manager Wally Buono says his players won't get any preferential treatment in receiving the vaccine, saying they'll have to line up like anyone else.
