so all addicts where forced into their addiction ?? and never decided they wanted to take the next step themselves ?? I know and have known lots of addicts and they all choose to start their own demise
if 9 of your friend OD on junk from the same source and you are aware of this and know this then you purchase your fix from the same source ?? personal choice or addiction
If 9 of your friends OD'ed on junk, maybe it's time to decide to not do drugs?

Watching a friend for years destroy himself with addiction was/has been a huge stage in my life. No matter how well this person would do, eventually he would relapse and spin downward again and again. Self sabotage at it's finest. The more you would try to help, the worse the situation. Crazy thing is that they know they are making bad judgement calls but can't stop the cycle. The addiction wins every time. They suck the life out of you, eventually you have to detach. Sad

I watched a good doc from BBC2 about a successful photographer that willingly tried heroin as part of documenting the culture. Became addicted and is a total junkie a decade later.
It's a real example of choosing to do a drug and not choosing to be a junkie.
"Addiction" probably served humans well as a survival mechanism over thousands of years. The tragedy is in the decisions people make about their addictions. A lot of high-achieving individuals have addictive/obsessive personalities. It can be their strength (top athletes, scientists, artists, business people), but for those who take up highly destructive habits to fill void of panic, anger, isolation or pain (or just plain stupidity) it is a downward spiral.
There are many organizations providing free training and Narcan kits. A few of us got trained through this organization in December. One friend has already used his Naloxone kit.
I have never heard of that substance before, so I searched a little and found out that in 2014 there had already been a growing consensus among experts of the various agencies in Europe that synthetic substances such as Fentanyl are a serious threat. It is mentioned as well that the consumption/usage of "traditional" drugs such as heroine and cocaine has apparently gone down, in Europe/Germany.
Did not cross-check this one, but what was really irritating is the fact that politicians did not really respond to the wake-up calls, it seems that such matters are no longer on the agenda. One of the articles I read states that this might have something to do with the fact that there are no longer areas in most big cities where drug addicts meet/exchange/buy drugs. Since it has more or less gone "underground" the politicians no longer seem to be interested.
And about addiction: I think it is way too easy to argue with choice or free will on this one, and I think that the replies Syncro has posted have more than a mere ounce of truth to them.
In my experience addiction has both a psychological and a physiological component, and I think that both parts do amplify each other, i.e. there is a connection between a psyche and the body of a person since there is no mind-body dichotomy.
Add to this the aforementioned psychological factors such as issues with a parent when an addict has been an infant/toddler, and I think what comes out is the vicious cycle that most addicts have a definite problem of stepping out of it.
I could even imagine that long-term use of a certain subtance alters the body's genetic material, or which kinds of hormones are produced and released into the body's blood. Heck, if this influence on the body's structure is true for even something "miniscule" as changing one's behavioural patterns through hard work (counselling/therapy), then it is definitely true for substance abuse. But in the first case the person actively tries to change a "learned" pattern (thought/behaviour/attitude), whereas in the latter the addict (body/mind) has been gotten used to a substance over a period of time.

I think that if someone is self aware they'll see early on that their response to something is addictive. Assuming this happens the person has to choice to quit before a dependency, physical or psychological, develops. The big issue is how many people are that self-aware or reflect on their actions? I'd say this reflection is even less likely at a very early age.
The social discourse should be about addiction (drugs, gambling, Facebook, weight lifting, whatever) and helping kids recognize when they are having an addictive response and how to fight it.
Mayor Stewart gets it. Many of these addicts are mentally ill and need help that only a place like Riverview can provide.

I lived not far from that place in HS , and knew a few people who worked there , the stories that came out of there where horrifying .
There is no doubt there are many people who need a place such as this but keeping it and them under control and funded is going to be paid for by who ??

We shoot there all the time. Today as a matter of fact our film crew is shooting in Crease Clinic, was out there this morning.
The buildings are way dated, poor floor plan layouts( Wasted space galore). Be better to knock it down and rebuild, it feels like a prison. The old West lawn building (condemned now,) has a four storey giant spiral staircase. That has a cage running up the centre of it. Was to stop people from throwing themselves and others to their deaths. You can see it in 54-40's music video "Blame your parents." That place is creepy.
