Rate: $31.03/hr to $31.03/hr

I'm sure with my mad negotiating skills I could get in at the high end of that range.

I'm considering making this my future occupation. Any general advice?

Depending on your skill set and learning abilities, BCIT has a pre apprenticeship course that works well. They credit you with the first year of schooling toward your apprenticeship. This approach works for people with limited experience in the trades.

The other way is starting right into a job at a electrical contractor and asking for a apprenticeship. Then off to first year schooling. I've seen multiple people taken advantage in this scenario. Not knowing how things should work, and having employers lie to you. The key is starting with a quality employer.

I started straight with an employer without the pre-app course and it worked out fine, but that was almost 30 years ago and things were different than they are today. Now most employers I know rarely hire newbies if they haven't taken the pre-app and proven they are somewhat capable of the work and learning the trade.

Hvac guys do well if you are mechanically and tech inclined, my buddy's son got discovered by a small company and went from The Keg to 50$/hr plus benefits in under 4 years.

Agreed

I haven't meet anyone lately that didn't take the pre apprenticeship first.

I was hired without pre-app, but I had telecom install experience. Just keep in mind that high rise construction which is where many of the jobs are, is tough and will leave you beat at the end of the day a lot of days. I also got injured for the third time in 2 years today.

Downside: no waitresses running around the jobsite.

Who do you think is fixing HVAC units on hot days on the roof when the A/C isn't working. That's after packing all your tools and gear up stairs [HTML_REMOVED] thru a roof hatch. It's not an easy job, that's for sure.
