So they're finally going to build the production Rimac Concept One EVs - only 8 to be built initially. Cost: $980,000 USD per. But so damn cool!

i just learned of the "ludicrous mode" option.

Finally saw one today in the wilds of West Van. Of course, being West Van, it was one of three Tesla's in the parking lot.

i just learned of the "ludicrous mode" option. now that's some fine nerdism. i like this musk character.

Well if you liked that, you'd love what he said in a conference call at one of last year's quarterly reports. With all sorts of wall street brokers and finance journalists on the line, when asked if the Mod S will have something even faster after Ludicrous mode, he said "That would be Maximum Plaid, in the Roadster v.2 in four years."

Noice. I have yet to feel what L-mode accel is like, and I'm kind of afraid - my P85 is pretty scary quick from a stop.

Any car company using references from Space Balls is doing alright.

Searched this thread but didn't see a link to this article.

It is a little dated now (Jan. 2016), but still interesting.

now this looks cool (if ridiculous, and awesomely anachronistic aesthetically):

Interesting article I came across this morning: Tesla tested for C02 emissions based on the output from the electricity generation on the grid.

Emissions can vary greatly based on source of power, however in some studies there can be a flow in looking at carbon fuel vehicles by breaking down C02 emissions via gas at the pump, not including the entire process from extraction to transportation.

"According to a 2000 report from the MIT Energy Lab, gasoline production accounts for 19 percent of the total lifetime CO2 emissions of a typical car. Actually driving the car accounts for about 75 percent of its lifetime carbon output."

Poor title for this article, but interesting to read how the EV market is developing in China.

China is trying to build an empire of electric cars — but the strategy has one huge flaw that will benefit Tesla

though china's primary mode of electricity generation is via coal burning.

curious - what's "greener"? burning fossil fuels in gas tanks or power plants?

Power plants operate at a higher efficiency than a gas engine, gas requiring more refining and transport. So with coal it comes really close, I've seen articles pointing to either side.

Big picture though unless serious breakthroughs in algae derived bio fuel or something similar are made no one will be fueling their internal combustion engines with renewables. EV's are as simple as building more rooftop solar and charging during the workday and evening.

^yep. decentralized power generation [HTML_REMOVED] storage is where it's at. tesla is certainly on the right track.

China has capped their coal generated power output and started closing down the dirtiest of their coal power plants. In 2014 they shut down 3.3 gigawatts worth of their dirty coal plants, and they continue to deactivate dirty plants, while moving to cleaner power sources. They are planning to shut down a further 60 gigawatts of coal power plants from 2016 through 2020.

China's total coal consumption decreased by 7.4% last year.

good they're making an effort, at least. i can't imagine the longterm health ramifications of the hideous air quality (not to mention environmental).
