I think its a metaphor for covid imo.
One group looks stuff up and one looks down. They may have flipped the roles around with the rednecks looking down instead of people looking down on those who do look stuff up. I think I got that right.
As for the second half being not as good as the first - it may not have had the upbeat comedy aspect to it but I didn't see anything too egregious from a movie stand point. It can be hard having a decent ending for anything. I also liked the family style get together dinner at the end as thats how I'd like to go out.
Still way better than the talented Mr Ripley which I still don't see what all the fuss was or is about.
I completely disagree with the your first two statements. The people "who look stuff up" according to your definition were the ones saying "don't look up" in the movie i.e. the ones who were wrong in the end. The other receivers of heavy criticism was the media in general whose only goal was mass engagement to the point of not taking the most serious news ever, seriously.
The other two things you said I agree with 100%. The part in the 2nd half with what the US does to the China, Russia, India attempt was very poignant. As was the dinner party.
