Professor Jonathan Turley at George Washington University ---

“The desire for some indictable or impeachable offense by President Trump has distorted the legal analysis to an alarming degree. Analysts seem far too thrilled by the possibility of a crime by Trump. The legal fact is that Comey’s testimony does not establish a prima facie — or even a strong — case for obstruction.

It is certainly true that if Trump made these comments, his conduct is wildly inappropriate. However, talking like Tony Soprano does not make you Tony Soprano….

The crime of obstruction of justice has not been defined as broadly as suggested by commentators……The mere fact that Trump asked to speak to Comey alone would not implicate the president in obstruction. ….

It would be a highly dangerous interpretation to allow obstruction charges at this stage. If prosecutors can charge people at the investigation stage of cases, a wide array of comments or conduct could be criminalized. It is quite common to have such issues arise early in criminal cases. Courts have limited the crime precisely to avoid this type of open-ended crime where prosecutors could threaten potential witnesses with charges unless they cooperated.

We do not indict or impeach people for being boorish or clueless … or simply being Donald Trump.”

(“James Comey’s testimony doesn’t make the case for impeachment or obstruction against Donald Trump”, USA Today)

Freedom of contract. We sell them guns that kill them; they sell us drugs that kill us.

So Trump 2, Kushner and Mannafort are all in the spotlight in what appears to be obvious proof of collusion and we don't even discuss it.  Trump's nonstop clown show has jaded us to the point where news of Russian connections to the president doesn't even make the front page.  These times are certainly interesting.  :(

With Trump surrounding himself with General's, anyone else thinking it may be war footing first and or protecting against a coup or a coup is underway?

Nope.  There is no way Trump has enough support in the military for a coup.  I don't think he has much more than a bubble of sycophants between him and the rest of the government.  A number of leaks show you how little people support him.

I think there are a whole bunch of bible punching, gun loving, mouth breathing republicans who still think trump is gona drain the swamp but in any case

While the Republicans own the electoral college they can't even figure out how to ditch obama care

Republicans own trump too but movers and shakers anybody with any brains hate him

Top government jobs remain vacant cuz who wants to  work for someone whose claim to fame is saying "yer fired"

and he is doing nothing when it comes to passing legislation... an ineffectual president who is good entertainment value

I think it's hard to gauge his real support given the political climate and the news, fake or not. We won't know until he's removed by "due process" and I do use that loosely, coup or just assassinated. Unfortunately, only then can we judge by the reaction of the populace who voted him in.

I don't think so, all you have to do is read between the lines and to stage a coup you need 100% devotion by a large number of people in both the military and gov't and do you see any evidence of that? The number of leaks from the White House is ridiculous and can only mean one thing: his "people" are anything but loyal. He is a wanna be strong man and doesn't have the ability to make anyone scared of him. Without that fear how could he pull off a coup? On top of that, any Republicans that were elected have to be watching his popularity and putting on their parachutes.

While I am hesitant to make Trump election promises, there is a lot of weak analogies in that article and they are trying way too hard to make Nixon and Trump one in the same.

So I won't make any 2020 predictions (and neither should anyone considering we don't have a clue who the Dems are running), but I will say why I think the writer is grasping in his comparison and just wants to go on an "I told you so" book tour in 2021 like Scott Adams is doing today.  He focuses on the tactics of both presidents, but at this point in each presidency, the two men were in very different positions despite his claim otherwise.  The most obvious comparison, of course, are the investigations into White House dealings that bring about the comparison in the first place.  Watergate had no real effect on Nixon's re-election bid as it was early and little was known of his involvement and with Kissinger lying about the state of the Vietnam War and claiming "peace was at hand" Nixon had the wind at his back leading to a landslide.  I don't see how Trump can follow this road map, especially with an approval rating comparable to Nixon's post-Watergate.

Now if you want to compare Nixon's second term to Trump's first that might have some good lessons.  :)
