Seen quite a few ads on craigslist about selling or buying remaining months on a cell phone contract.

Is this actually legal? Anyone actually done it? What are the potential pitfalls?

(Thinking of ditching my Telus contract with 11 months remaining. They told me Id have to pay off $220)

Hmm, I didnt word the initial post very well did I…

I know there is a penalty clause (though I dont know the fine print of how its calculated) and Im not questioning whether Telus can do this, more Im after peoples real world experience of swapping out of a contract.

(I wanna go PAYG and buy my next phone outright)

anyone can do it. YOu just have to transfer the exiting customer's contract into your name. i.e. guy has 8 months left in the contract. If you take the contract, he'll give the phone for free. He calls into telephone company and gives your info. You call in with your info and now you have 8 months left of a contract.

I sold a contract earlier this year. Never thought it would work, but had a bunch of people call for it. Pretty straight forward process, and your telco will walk you through it.

I took over my friends Rogers contract/iPhone a year or so ago. I think there was a small transfer fee (what a surprise) but it was reasonably painless. Did it all over the phone.

As long as your contract doesn't have an assignment clause saying you can't assign it to someone else your good.

I did it when I left Canada. It's as easy as everyone has said.

That's the problem with cities, they're refuges for the weak, the fish that didn't evolve.

I don't want to google this - sounds like a thing that NSMB will be better at.
