Detroit truly became a thriving city because of the automobile. It and Flint(Michigan) are perfect examples of why you dont start a city with one aspect of industry. There are several cases where people were warned as Detroit boomed, that they would become another ghost town much like the towns during the gold rush. As usual, nobody listened. What? Groups of people not heeding the warnings of others? Impossible. History never repeats itself.

Isn't that how most cities start? Their problem was not growing in a diversified manner. Everything revolved around the auto industry because it was easy money. Easy come, easy go.

I grew up an hour north of big D. Sad to see it turn like that, but can't say I'm surprised after what Flint went through.

Detroit in the 90's was a very cool city. I haven't been there since though. Shitty roads though - bring a big SUV, or the potholes will jar your brains out. Ironic, isn't it?
