Yesterday we had the biggest one I've ever seen wander through our backyard - upper lynn valley. A little scary with three little kids running around. We're pretty used to the bears and I'm pretty sure there is very little risk, but the coyotes???

Don't you guys have fish and wildlife? you've got a problem animal, you pay taxes, and there are laws against shooting it? Phone 'em.

This was in Alberta, the old man just started carrying a rifle in the tractor. He never was able to shoot one, but they stopped hanging around. Smart creatures.

I don't know if your buddy is nuts, but I can tell you first-hand that camera flash at night has no effect on racoons. I've tried it myself, camping in Algonquin Park but maybe those were celebrity racoons used to pappratzzi cameras.

Is this thread called "racoons"?

Sure they hasven't inter-bred with the big bad wolf? Like the ones that ate Taylor Mitchell and hang out in Toronto that "The Nature of Things" did a feature on not long ago.

I'd seen coyotes in a few places around the lower mainland and they were not big, but I suppose there could now be hybrids in this area.

I disagree. The coyotes we saw on a regular basis back in PoCo vs coyotes I have seen everywhere else are like a husky vs a cocker spaniel in size difference.

Those are some well fed SOB's in the Lower Mainland.

That's the problem with cities, they're refuges for the weak, the fish that didn't evolve.

I don't want to google this - sounds like a thing that NSMB will be better at.

I suggest a gun gasp assuming you're outside city limits in a place where discharge of firearms is legal.

Something in .223/5.56 caliber would be ideal, but you could also do something like pick up a surplus semi-auto rifle like an SKS for around $300. The surplus 7.62x39 round it shoots is extremely cheap and plentiful.
