Glad to see that aside from the marine workers on the board,we have a whole crew of marine protocol experts.

As for the coal incedent, who's to say a tug didn't lose a drive or something?

If we burn it under water, there won't be any smoke. That pretty much makes it zero emmission.

And comparing it to a ferry running aground and sinking along the widest part of the Inside Passage north of the Queen Charlotte Strait is like Mega-Rolleyes. Never gonna happen. Never. Ever.

If the ferry had 2 escort tugs with it then it would be comparable. Unfortunately for your argument it didn't.

I know this made a few people I work with rethink their pilot aspirations (I know a few
that are in the course right now.

This ship running into the dock reminds me of the ferry running into the marina in Horseshoe Bay a few years ago.

Going from memory, I think that was caused by the throttle becoming disconnected due to a missing cotter pin?

a friend in the pilotage admitted it doesn't look good no matter what the facts are.

Because that's just the way I roll…

Yep cotter pin was forgotten after a refit.
I'm surprised the [big] ferries like Horseshoe bay or the Cojo/Clipper into Victoria and
other crowded marinas don't require a tug assist. Imagine the Coho rounding Laurel point
losing power, she has not bow thruster, busy summer day with the westerlies blowing stink
and it goes into the corner where all the tourists are going on boat tours, looking at
the crap being sold and the buskers doing their stuff. It was a very lucky thing no one
died in the Horseshoe bay incident.

New rule … if you're not an expert with at least 30 years experience in a thing, you're completely barred from having an opinion about that thing.

Some major idiot in this one. Just because you are the stand on vessel doesn't mean you
don't have a responsibility to get avoid collision.

Westshore just finished up an extensive planned maintenance shutdown too.
Have to think this will be an expensive insurance claim.

Does a ferry really need escort tugs sailing the Inside Passage? Sure it doesn't. But sh!t can happen, despite all safeguards and protocols, especially when it comes down to human error. If it looks bad, it looks bad.
