So how to rein in this runaway corporate power?

The election promise that comes closest is the NDP’s call for an annual net wealth tax of 1 per cent, applied exclusively to those with assets of more than $10 million

"just five meat-and-milk giants, JBS, Tyson, Cargill, Dairy Farmers of America, and Fonterra, produce more combined emissions per year than major oil players like Exxon, Shell, or BP. Taken together, 20 livestock firms are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than Germany, Britain, or France."

Any industrial installation, including solar and wind farms, profoundly disrupts the landscape on which it sits. If it were possible to fully satisfy the bloated energy appetites of affluent nation by covering hundreds of millions or billions of acres of the Earth’s surface with power-harvesting hardware, the result would be irreparable ecological damage.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing booms to supply such a sprawling proliferation of solar arrays, wind power plants, battery-backed electric grids, electric-vehicle fleets, and other hardware would require outrageously large inputs of metals such as lithium, cobalt, silver, copper, aluminum, nickel, iron, and a host of exotic rare earth elements.

Ultimately, the solution is less people as people who have means are not going to give up their luxuries. Maybe China was on the right path, but instead there needs to be a child lottery where couples have to win the opportunity to have a kid. Sounds pretty dystopian I know, but unless most of us are willing to go back to subsistence living it could be the future. I tend to think nature will sort things out for us first before we get any sort of chance to implement some grand plan to "save" humanity and continue our devouring of the only place that can sustain human life for the foreseeable future.

This article from the Pique represents why I tend to think we've already gone past the tipping point and that we're now just sitting around for the next few decades until climate change hits the runaway point and all we can do is just sit back and watch the place burn.

It would take 74 million acres of solar only to supply 100% of the earth's power needs. Nope not "billions" nor "hundreds of millions".

It's ok guys. The global economy seems to be imploding so we'll have something else to panic about for a while.

Still, that would a tragedy unless the majority of those panels were placed on privately and publicly owned sturctures to minimize the impact on the environment.

And the cost. Moving to green must be done in a way that breaks up the big power companies.

How much space is available on existing roofs that could be used for solar? Even better than solar farms, because the generation would be at point of use - zero/minimal transmission losses.

Interesting listen as we grapple with the recurring impacts of the Climate Crisis.

Can we also talk about how infuriating it is that the three richest men in the world have all decided to blow rockets into space so William f%$king Shatner can go for an 11 min ride? Oh and let's not forget all the rest of the world's Uber rich that will go for a multi million dollar amusement park ride at the expense of putting out enough emissions to run a small county's cars for a month. And the cbc, without voicing a single comment about global warming, broadcasted the countdown like a bunch of fools.

I'm posting because I'm still mad 6 hours after the broadcast and I needed somewhere to vent.

Thank you.
