Ultimately, the solution is less people as people who have means are not going to give up their luxuries. Maybe China was on the right path, but instead there needs to be a child lottery where couples have to win the opportunity to have a kid. Sounds pretty dystopian I know, but unless most of us are willing to go back to subsistence living it could be the future. I tend to think nature will sort things out for us first before we get any sort of chance to implement some grand plan to "save" humanity and continue our devouring of the only place that can sustain human life for the foreseeable future.
This article from the Pique represents why I tend to think we've already gone past the tipping point and that we're now just sitting around for the next few decades until climate change hits the runaway point and all we can do is just sit back and watch the place burn.

How much space is available on existing roofs that could be used for solar? Even better than solar farms, because the generation would be at point of use - zero/minimal transmission losses.
