Reddit and Twitter really latched onto confirmation bias with this one. Good example of why to not use them as a primary news source. Solid place for rage-baiting though.

Not only does stuff like this show how much bad information can be distributed in online forums (present company excluded of course), but it kinda vindicates the MSM.  When you trace back the bullshit stories that somehow take off into Reddit common knowledge it usually starts at some shady blog masquerading as a news site.

It's like that video from late 2019 that people claimed was police in Wuhan going into an apartment complex and shooting people quarantined with covid. You see two uniformed men walk from a van to out of frame and a gunshot is heard.

Turned out they were animal control in a completely different part of the country putting down a rabid dog.

Note to self: Don't play a harmonic in Hong Kong or I might get arrested.

So they were spies after all.

Holy hell man, tell me you don't get all of your news from the South China Morning Post.

Factual reporting rating of "mixed" is not good. 😅

I sure don't. Do you think the SCMP is controlled by Beijing or something?

You could have googled it. It's being reported by lots of sources.

Globe and mail broke the story

Alibaba, a massive Chinese cooperation, owns the South China Morning Post. It was purchased with the express purpose of improving China's image. So, yeah.

I actually get it delivered intermittently to my house 😅, have for years. Never ordered it, called to cancel it many times, stops for a while then shows up again. (Our friends that lived here previously subscribed). The headlines are hilarious: "Xi (does some terrific thing)!"

Even if a news source isn't completely unreliable, you have to question the stories they choose to highlight as headlines...

^^^ Now you're shifting the goalposts though as the original assertion  was that the story was bunk.

Maybe a better question is why did China jail two Canadians who were accused of passing info on North Korea? In that light the Spavor and Kovrig detentions definitely seem like retaliation for the Meng Wanzhou arrest. Either way, at the end of the day there are more than enough reasons to distrust/dislike the Chinese government.

I've see  lots of SCMP articles being critical of Beijing though and it's actually blocked in the mainland so I don't think it's quite as black and white as being a purely Beijing mouthpiece. But anyways how about we forget the SCMP article and focus on the globe and mail article that contains basically the same information.

I remember quite clearly being told by our government that the arrest of the two Michaels was 100% arbitrary and based on nothing just pure retaliation. Now we find out that was only half true and that there was real espionage happening and that our government lied to us about it.

I do agree they were arrested in retaliation though which China had every right to do IMO when we kidnapped Meng Wenzhou at the behest of the Americans for "violating" illegal economic sanctions the US had no right to enforce in the first place.

Countries don't always instantly arrest foreign spies. They often let them do their work while monitoring them so they can gain more information about their objectives. When Meng was illegally detained by Canada China retaliated by scooping up two known spies. I'm sure they had a shitty time but those are the risks one takes when doing this kind of work.

If Spavor is telling the truth that it was only Kovrig doing the spying then Canada definitely owes him compensation for what he went through.

It was definitely retaliation.  They were released right after Meng Wanzhou was released.  I doubt we will get all the details, but it begs the question "What is considered spying?"  It sounds like Spavor relayed information about North Korea to Kovrig (a former diplomat) that he gathered himself in his dealing with Lil' Kim.  Did he have a Chinese security clearance?  Why would it be OK for Spavor to have the alleged "state secrets" in the first place unless he had some special status?

I need to know a lot more, but it sure doesn't sound like they stole state secrets or meet my definition of spying.
