Looks like they had a great experience being detained.

Fucking missionaries. Can't believe they got away with that bullshit for 30 years.

Yes... Spying for Christ

Having a religion is legal in China, promoting it is not. Basically these douchebags were in China flaunting the law for 30 years.

One of my personal faves.

Orange I guess he deserved it? Since the Tibetan Monks are such a violent group. Must be great to be imprisoned and tortured for standing up for something you believe in.

I bet you don't actually know much about what he believes in. As far as what I believe goes that is not much of anything this guy says.

Under the old system he would have likely come out pf prison missing hands, or feet or eyes.

Do you actually know how Tibet became a part of China in detail? Do you know what it was like there when they were independent? Do you know how most people reacted when the PLA first arrived in Tibet? Do you know how the PLA behaved upon arrival. Do you know how many of the last 2000 years Tibet was a part of the Chinese empire? Do you you know who started the 1959 uprising and who was covertly supporting them hoping to increase the violence as much as possible?

If not then we can't even byegin to have a meaningful discussion about Tibet.

Answers:

In meetings and signed agreements.

One of the worst places to live in the world.

With open arms and tears of joy.

Many PLA soldiers went days without eating for days as they were not allowed to take any food from locals.

Most of them

Butthurt fuedal lords that were pissed off about losing the land and serfs they oppressed to live a life of lavish luxury while the serfs starved. The CIA was very happy to arm them and many monks who also used to live the high life on the backs of people who were lucky to live to 30 were also very happy to help the butthurt lords stash weapons and fighters in their monastaries. People need to drop the assumed purity of high ranking buddhist monks. Sometimes not even Catholic priests can compete with these fuckers. Just look at what they're doing in Burma these days.

In short Tibet today is so much better it's not even funny. Life expectancy has doubled and everybody eats and can get a job and an education. Too bad some people there are just too hung up on being allowed to choose their leaders via ridiculous religious rituals that were only designed as an arbitrary system of oppressive control, it probably would have gone a lot more smoothly. This monk was probably just another high roller too hung up on the lavish lifestyle of feudalism to give it up without a fight.

well it wasn't always under Chinese control and Chinese control in say the 13th century is vastly different from Chinese control today. basically from about 1640 until 1951 Tibet was more or less independent, with some periods of Chinese influence. of course that changed in 1951. part of what's interesting is that it's possible to trace distinct genetic lineage that different from the Chinese back some 20,000yrs. so depending on how you want to slice it, China has pretty much always been an occupying force or controller of Tibet.

all the history aside tho there are really only a couple of questions that need to be asked. do the Tibetan people want independence from China and if so are they being given that opportunity? do the Tibetan people feel they are being oppressed by the Chinese and are the Chinese using oppressive force to maintain control of Tibet?

And the Chinese and Russians had no involvement in the annexing of Tibet...

It's easy to sit on a high horse and accuse a country of oppression when there isn't a gang of world powers constantly trying to fuck with you.

It's not a high horse, it's simply looking at history and the information available. China decided to close themselves off from most of the rest of the world and go down an ideological and military path that pretty much determined their fate over the past century.

Look we get it that you lived there for a while and have a much better view and understanding of the place than us as well as a certain allegiance, but if you had to be realistic about it do you honestly think the average citizen in China has a better chance at a great life than the average citizen in most Western democracies? If so, then why the fuck is the moneyed elite of China buying up the west coast of North America and sending their kids here for school?

Well considering that the last time they opened up an alliance of world powers used it as a chance to push opium on them can you blame them for closing off?

And look I realize a bunch of corrupt elite have taken advantage of our weak government to hide their ill-gotten gains and insulate their families but there are actually a lot more rich Chinese who aren't leaving than ones who are.

There are also lots of Chinese people who move to Canada, don't like it, and move back to China after a few years so drop thr whole "but everybody wants to live here instead" arrogance.

My point in regard to the monk isn't if Tibet should or shouldn't be a part of China. It's how the Chinese police state scoops up people, jails them, beats the fuck out of them for something every person should be entitled to, freedom of speech or as you may call it as China's biggest fan... Unlawful assembly.

See you assume he was scooped up for peaceful protesting. 2000 PLA soldiers were killed in the 1959 uprising so I assume he was either killing soldiers or aiding the butthurt feudal lords to kill soldiers. There's also no proof that anything he says about his treatment is true.

And in case you hadn't been paying attention we don't exactly treat accused terrorists humanely or with due process either.
