Canadian DMCA Bill Within Six Weeks

I hope you like receiving takedown letters from lawyers of rights holders. We are about to increase the litigation within this country by a lot from this new development.

PMO sided squarely with Moore's vision of a U.S.-style copyright law. The detailed provisions will be negotiated over the coming weeks by the respective departments, but they now have their marching orders of completing a bill that will satisfy the U.S. that comes complete with tough anti-circumvention rules and no flexible fair dealing provision.

However you want to cut it, this will only push pirating to new sophisticated levels while supporting a business model that has failed and refuses to adapt to a new generation of communication and media. Brief point: A CD is not worth $15 for 2 good songs and 20 minutes of previews is not what I bought the movie for.

Now this sort of thing is inevitable and even required, but I just wish Canada would have been able to come up with an alternative to punishing and suing, while laying to ground work to kicking people off the internet. Brief Joke: Yes we all agree that there should be a majin button sometimes :P

I guess there is one message here. Change is inevitable, but I guess you can at least postpone it.

Now this sort of thing is inevitable and even required,

I disagree that it's required. Since media is going towards digital distribution, the marketing and packaging costs, along with all other overhead (Store fronts) are removed from the equation. Bands are able to promote themselves, etc. So in the example of music, why would I go onto iTunes, use a proprietary front end, and buy an album for the same price I could go to the store and buy, and know that it's still overpriced?

If the recording industry pulled their heads out of their arses, dropped the cost of music, then more people would buy. (The same goes for the movie and video game industry, but they are both more complicated…)

There are a lot of things that I would gladly buy if they were cheaper, but at the current pricing, I can't justify the cost. I wouldn't be surprised if iTunes dropped their price in half, removed all DRM from the music, they would still make about the same.

I tend to think we're gravitating to a UK style of society.

All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach.

Hypocrites!!

Record industry faces liability over 'infringement'

_The infringer has effectively already admitted owing at least $50
million and the full claim could exceed $60 billion. If the dollars
don't shock, the target of the lawsuit undoubtedly will: The defendants
in the case are Warner Music Canada, Sony BMG Music C…anada, EMI Music
Canada, and Universal Music Canada, the four primary members of the
Canadian Recording Industry Association.

The claims arise from a longstanding practice of the recording industry
in Canada, described in the lawsuit as "exploit now, pay later if at
all." It involves the use of works that are often included in
compilation CDs (ie. the top dance tracks of 2009) or live recordings.
The record labels create, press, distribute and sell the CDs, but do
not obtain the necessary copyright licences.

The class action seeks the option of statutory damages for each
infringement. At $20,000 per infringement, potential liability exceeds
$60 billion.
These numbers may sound outrageous, yet they
are based on the same rules that led the recording industry to claim a
single file sharer is liable for millions in damages._
