Anybody know which highway this is? I know its lake tahoe..
I remember we drove on this like 20 years ago in a RV, would be cool if I could hit it up again.
Ha Ha! Made you look.

The Larabee campground is a bit whatever but the park is really nice. Depending on the age of your kids there are some really neat sandstone formations down by the water and a nice beach facing the ocean. There is also some decent XC riding on the mountain behind the campground that would be accessible from the campground. There is also an interurban rail grade trail directly behind that is also accessible from the campground that would be suitable to family rides. The drive down Chuckanut is really cool and Fairhaven/Bellingham are funky places to hangout.

Thanks! That is very helpful. I originally got my info from google maps and a bit of sleuthing, but real first hand experience is much much better.
IIRC, Fort Ebey State Park has some XC trails in it also. 3 miles to the gas station/beer store.

I'll share a secret spot I found a few years back when my gf and I camped along the coast.
sorry to say ken but this spot is no more. we had a look for it, and they've paved that fsr and turned it into an access point for a day use spot in the dunes with access to the beach. but, you can hike/bike in from the sutton campground, which isn't too bad, on singletrack that cuts through the woods and/or the dunes

Ahh crap. Glad I got to experience it when I did! It was a nice find at the time.

Now I feel bad…..
I was a bit puzzled by your findings and went back onto google maps. Looks like I gave the wrong directions.
The place i was at is 3 mile creek, which makes sense if you re-read my observations about the drive in and the location of the beach.
Apologies if anyone else was led astray!!!
My favourite part of California was leaving.
Also the whole coast was a wall of fog and we didnt see nuthin from ft.bragg onwards.
definitley need to spend more time in Bend Oregon though.

hah! i was wondering about your definition of "camping on the beach" as the road we found ended at the dunes, still a 5-10 minute walk from the water. well, you misdirections only resulted in an extra 20 minutes of driving and a bit of head scratching
speaking of "secret spots" though, in norcal we pulled into an unmarked pullout at the top of a small rise that seemed promising. drove a little ways off the rode to a lookout point with a pretty sweet view:
just to the left of this shot there's a sheltered area that can't been seen from the road, perfectly level and just the right size for a truck, with a trail that winds down the ridge and on to the beach. had we been bike touring, or even car camping without the kid, i would have stopped here for the night. all the guns in the US make me pretty wary of doing anything even seemingly unsanctioned… but if you can find this spot (hint: carts!) i recommend checking it out

that's too bad
coastal fog can be a bummer
but get a bit of elevation and you're free of it
and its down right magical in the forest
