Buying a new replacement dishwasher

Any tips? Old one is a 17+ years old Whirlpool and the motor is dying. The rack is rusting away and it doesn't so such a great job cleaning anymore. Any tips on good-value brands (someone mentioned Bosch), correct fit with kitchen cabinetry, anything to consider re:plumbing and electrical (already in place) with the current one, any unpleasant "surprises" to be prepared for, what to avoid?

What can I expect to pay when all said and done?

Measure the space and get exact dimensions so you know the new one will fit. Sizing is pretty standard but best to play safe.

Pretty easy job to hook these things up yourself. I've done three and as long as you can turn a screw and play safe with electrical wiring, no biggie.

gotta say it again - Bosch, Bosch, Bosch.

Just make sure it is a model where you can turn off its beeping.

If you buy Bosch, make sure the handle/pull area is solidly built (not plastic). Mine cracked.

My Bosch unit also doesn't do well with solids and has a lot of scum buildup. Detergent tends to clump also. I will be buying a different brand next time.

Installation was super easy so you won't have a problem.

make sure you can get parts. I do my own repairs/maintenance and some brands wont sell you parts unless you'r one of their certified techs. I used to get parts for my LG appliance from the US (http://www.repairclinic.com/) but now they wont sell them to a canadian address. I will not buy anything unless I can get parts.

After buying our Bosch for home (US made) and having one installed at the office (German made), I realized that there are significant differences in manufacturing, even within the same brand.

If you go with Bosch and can spring for it, go for the one with the stainless steel exterior (the insulation is wrapped with with an SS exterior) and an SS drum, while these are the more expensive, they are typically made in Germany (high QC maybe - seems to be better than made in USA, maybe its a product line thing), have more robust metal parts, and run quieter because of better insulation.

So really, it comes down to budget, my feeling is that the more you spend, the better it is. One of our friends just installed a Miele Futura and its really nice, it just costs more than a carbon bike, which is a bit nuts.

thanks. looks like a good site. no LG tho (and no Bosh btw). stay clear from brands that don't support their customers… I say screw Bosh (and LG) unless you want to get ripped off or cant do things on your own.

Or you could find a place that supplies parts for both Bosch and LG locally…

Can you get parts from this site shipped to the border and just go pick it up?

Apparently there's no surefire way to determine if that Bosch dishwasher was made in China or Germany anymore… at least that's what my google-fu came up with.

We got our Bosch in spring 2011 and I remember finding out that it was made in the USA, can't remember if it was a serial number lookup or something in the catalog.

Just found out that Bosch US production ended in 2011 (asked google).
