Luckily I work like 5 min from the Pac hwy crossing so getting to the border and back is no time really. I went down today and filled my truck up for $64 usd ($85ish cad) which is about $40 savings. What's the Jerry can rule? Anyone have real world experience on the subject? I was hoping to find 2 10 gallon cans but they seem to be non existant so I'd have to carry 4 5 Gallon cans which might throw some red flags.
Bringing back Jerry cans from the states
From what I have read, any gasoline that isn’t in your tank is subject to being declared. Apparently there is no duty, but you can be charged applicable taxes.

If you fill up gas cans and bring them back from the states make sure to keep your receipt for the fuel, if you do not and get asked about the gas cans without a receipt you can be charged just shy of 18% for your total gas tank and the gas cans regardless of the amount of fuel you actually purchased.
A few years back we went over for something else and took a few cans to fill up. Our vehicle was almost full crossing so really we just filled the cans and topped up the tank on the way back. We were asked about the fuel and were able to show the quantity purchased through a receipt and at that point had to pay about 17.8%. Basically broke even after all was said and done.
Hmm might just be worth the loss of time every week to avoid the hassle vs bringing cans and crossing once every 2 weeks.
you could buy an old pick-up and build in a custom fuel tank that holds like 200 or more liters.

farmers would do that ^^ in the war years because they could burn as much fuel to farm as they needed while everyone else was rationed and farmers tended to have the tools to build hidden fuel tanks with remote fillers
by the time you guys get this figured out the prices will be back down but I think you wana keep your reciepts
from newton I used to be over the border, grab a mini van full of fuel/2 gal milk/a couple bricks cheese and be back home by 6:30 am ... pre 911
