The notorious annual dolphin hunt got underway last week in the small Japanese town of Taiji. During the six-month hunting season, terrified dolphins are violently herded into a narrow cove. Most are slaughtered — but scores of “good-looking” ones are captured and shipped off to aquariums.

The Taiji hunts always receive a barrage of condemnation, and especially so since the release of the Oscar-nominated documentary “The Cove” in 2009. While the hunters maintain they are culling dolphin “pests” who eat too many fish, the primary economic incentive for the Taiji drive hunts is the aquarium industry. Live dolphins sell for around $50,000, and this is what keeps the hunters in business.

Vancouver Aquarium does some amazing research and conservation efforts in the the Pacific North West. It's not fair to group them with the amusement park aquariums without at least reading their point of view on the matter.

well our local aquarium is the vancouver aquarium and they don't buy animals for shows. they haven't captured an animal for show for over three decades.

In 2014 The Park Board proceeded to commission an independent report from US wildlife veterinarian and scientist Dr. Joseph Gaydos[45] in which he examined the aquarium's animal care standards, accreditation and research and compared it to similar facilities in North America. In his report[46] he found that the Vancouver Aquarium "either meets or exceeds North American industry standards". He also concluded that the aquarium had "an active research department that seems to make good use of studying captive cetaceans, not only for being able to provide better care and understanding of captive animals, but to a greater extent […] to benefit our understanding and conservation of cetaceans in the wild."

i used to volunteer at the aquarium as a university student. behind the scenes their emphasis really is about conservation research, habitat rehabilitation, and education of the public to better understand how to coexist with marine life that surrounds use here on the west coast. so i think your statement to "boycott" aquariums does more harm to the situation than good.

We were shooting a film down at he docks near the seabus a while back. That aquarium operation that has the seal and other wildlife rescue you speak of is great. After being let to have a look around at all those little guys being rehabilitated, had to throw down a donation.

I agree. the content of the article is definitely of concern and the parties involved with those activities should definitely be penalized.same goes for the fuckers who captured a polar bear to put into a mall in china. fucking fuckers should get the same punishment for doing such a thing.

I'm always torn between the harm that some of these institutions cause to animals and the important research, education, and public awareness that many conduct.

Best to research the facility and it's policies before you categorize them all the same way be it positive or negative imo.
