Like Danski said, if my 12-inch iBook didn't do the job so well I'd get a MacBook. You can spec a pretty nice one for around $2000.
Either Mac or PC, between 15" and 13", using it for everyday stuff so no gaming or video editing…
If you're not doing anything intensive on it, then you can get a system for under $1K that will be more than enough to fit your needs. For $2K you can get a pretty powerful laptop.
If you want some performance, and cheap, check out the Dell Inspiron lineup. For $1300 you get a T7200 processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, DVD burner, WinXP MCE, ATI Radeon x1400 video, free upgrade to Vista, and for an extra $40 you can get a larger battery that will give you 4 hours of runtime.

I have a macbook that I got in August, and I like it plenty. For everyday type stuff (ie. Internet junk, writing papers, bookkeeping blabla) it's great. I've done some recording with garage band (9 tracks, emulated amps, fake drum track), and everything ran pretty smooth for that. Suprisingly smooth, actually. Editing short internet videos with iMovie works about as well as you could possibly want from a free program running on the lowest-end laptop they offer - ie. smoothly enough that I've never complained about anything.
Eventually I'm going to upgrade to 2gb of RAM, and that should solve most of the few slowdowns I run into. As of right now, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I was a bit iffy about spending the extra to go for a mac over a PC, as I don't really have the money to just throw around, but as an all-around no-hassle package that does everything I want without my having to think about it at all, I'm glad I got the Macbook. This is coming from someone who has been avidly, and happily, using PCs since a 286 with a monochrome monitor.
I'd go for a Macbook, and then use the leftover money to buy more RAM, a monitor for home and/or whatever other stuff you might want. If you're just getting it for "normal" use, the pro is going to run into diminishing gains vs. cost for what you'd be doing with it, even though it is cool to be able to say you have a macbook pro.

We have 2 Toshiba's at work and ive owned one before which got stolen, great machines. Dont know if they make one with a 15" screen, im guessing they do.. both of ours are 17" and are a bit bulky.
