Well…Confederation Bridge is 12.9 km long…

You would probably need two bridges - one up north and one down south. The southern bridge would be interesting as the most economical route would be from Bellingham or Anacortes across Orcas and San Juan Island. There would be some customs issues…that would be a harder thing to take care of then the engineering!!!

Up North you could go across Quadra, Read to the mainland just north of Lund. Add a bridge at Saltery Bay across Nelson Island to Earls Cove and one from the Gibsons side to Furry Creek and you have everything connected. The only ferries you need are the ones that go to some of the Islands…and Maybe the Nam…but if you took the ferries away, would anyone go to Nam anymore???

Some big bridges…

Akashi-kaikyo - 1,991 m - would work at Furry Creek to cross the Strait of Georgia…

I read somewhere, that if it was feasible to build a bridge(or series of bridges), the toll charge would exceed the current cost of a ferry trip…something like $250 one-way.

must have been David Hahn or someone in the boat industry that told you that. 13 km for $45 - what's Twassen straightline over Galiano to Duncan? 25 km?

ya cause the water is just as shallow as it is out east and the bottom is just as hard…lol

are you saying the cost per km to build a bridge would be same? if so, one could say those fares would be twice as much…so pretty much the cost of the ferry trip.

I have a feeling that to build that bridge and building one here would be much different, but I've yet to personally crunch the numbers to see if it can be done for the same cost.

The Strait of Georgia is well over 1000 feet deep in places, it's a major shipping lane and the sea floor is constantly changing due to weather, tides/currents, seismic activity etc. There will never be a bridge to Vancouver Island. Even if it were possible, BC doesn't have the population to support the cost.
