Traxxas Slash 4x4 is the simple answer.
Starting at around $350 for the kit, then add another $100 for supplementary BS like a better charger, and a second battery.

I've had mine for two years, and it's a blast. There's a training setting for the kids that limits it to half throttle. There's also a race setting that boosts output to 45 mph. I don't use that setting because when I do I break things. The good thing is that the hobby shop should have a ton of parts ready to go.

Check out the Traxxas site as there are a lot of options set up and ready to run.

Future Shop also sells traxxas.

Being an agoraphobic adrenaline junkie would be pretty convenient, because you could get your rush from just going to the store to get some milk instead of having to jump off a mountain or out of an airplane.

why not nitro? they give more bang for the buck compared to electric and you don't have to recharge… could get a nitro slash but I think if you want bashing it's probably better to get a monster truck like an hpi savage

Slash is a great choice. If you are budget limited check out the ECX Smash, $80 ready to run. Same price as the crappy toy grade ones you get at Costco. It's pretty slow out of the box, but it gets you into the game of the proper hobby grade cars. My boys have been hammering on them since christmas and have yet to break anything…even survived a dunk in a river.

If you go right to Eneloop style AA's that picks up the speed. Next upgrade will be to 6.0V as the boys learn to drive, then 7.2V

Good info every one. I think price point to start with the Smash is good choice. If i like/use it enough i would consider the slash.

rc cars are a slippery slope man.

buy one and it might not be very long till you move back in with your parents and all you wear is sweat pants and jammin jay halsey t-shirts.

lol no doubt. ive spent way to much time in hobby shops. fun hobby to get into but definitely can be an expensive one. Start of with a decent brand, parts support is always key. Traxxas, HPI, Team Associated, Tamiya and a few others are good brands with tons of parts support. my first rc was an HPI Savage X 4.6 nitro monster truck and i still have it. I bought myself an electric Traxxas truck and hated the fact that to close to the speed my nitro went i would have to drop $400 for brushless motor [HTML_REMOVED] esc and batteries.

Traxxas best bang. Slash 4x4 will take so much abuse. Never get a Nitro car unless you like working on it more then running it. Gas engine RC is fun but cost a ton

Shoots with Nikon D2H

Don't forget Craiglist. There are always a bunch up for sale there.

Does anyone here dabble in RC rock crawlers by chance?
