It's James Cameron's pet project. He wrote a short version of the script about 15 years ago. He was going to make right after 'Titanic' but for some reason didn't (I don't know why).

Cameron has been working on this project for 10 years developing new CGI technology. What the technology is can be explained here http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/04/24/a-few-new-avatar-behind-the-scenes-photos-from-empire/ Also the other reason he didn't start this project directly after Titanic was he felt CGI wasnt good enough at the time, so he waited.

Not true. The acting in most porn films is way better than that of most mainstream films these days. Now of course I only watch 3 minutes of acting at a time, so this may not be accurate.
