To be fair, South Africa has one of the worst rates of violent crime in the world, and it is thus quite common for "people of means" to have a loaded weapon near at hand almost all the time.

Crimes like car-jacking are so prevalent that locals do NOT drive with car windows down at any time, as it invites someone reaching through the open window at any given traffic light. High end cars are often ordered with the bullet resistant glass option.

Some have flame throwers that shoot up the sides to grill a would be carjacker. A buddy of mine said that when he would stop at a store he would drive in full speed with money ready, run in grab cigarettes, throw money at the clerk and run back to his car which was still running. Good times.

In Mexico same deal. Someone told me his uncle down there drives around in a big Suburban and is always armed as the possibility of being kidnapped for ransom is real. He said once his uncle shot and killed a guy at a traffic stop (presumed abduction attempt) and sped off. He called the cops on his cellphone to report it. He went to the police station and gave a statement to the cops, and at the end they all shrugged, smiled and shook hands and that was the end of that.

Maybe that is the lesson us pro gun regulation guys need to understand. Americans just want to live free like they do in Juarez and Cape Town.

Cape Town is downright civilized, compared to Johannesburg.

South Africa and Mexico actually have more restrictive firearm laws than we do here in Canada.

Did you know that there is actually a CCW permit in Canada? Very very few people actually legally carry here, but it is possible in some situations.

Laws are meaningless where there is no enforcement (due to apathy or corruption), little chance of consequences and no rule of law. I'm sure Rwanda had laws against murder when 1 million people were killed there in 1994.

Anyone with money can circumvent the laws of South Africa. Their sitting president raped the daughter of a family friend and got away with it. It's pretty much understood that money and politics influenced the court decision.

What are they going to do - stuff them down their crotch to attract more wives?
