"A Vancouver Provincial Court judge spared a female rioter jail time, despite the Crowns call for her to be held in custody for up to six months for her role in the Stanley Cup riot.
Judge Karen Senniw sentenced Natalee Dennis to four months of house arrest in her Tofino residence except to go to work or attend school. The sentence was less than half the nine months of house arrest requested by her lawyer, Jason Tarnow.
But Senniw noted Dennis was not an instigator, has completed a native treatment program, was remorseful, accepted responsibility for her actions and received online and media notoriety. And Senniw said she must consider Denniss First Nations status by a law that requires judges to avoid jailing natives whenever possible"
