Anyone own a Jeep?

I'm looking at older Jeep Cherokee's right now, heard pretty good things about them mostly.

I found a 2000 Cherokee Sport with the 4.0L inline 6, 4x4, power everthing, etc. Its really clean, no rust, and visibly in really good condition other than the tires are probably going to need replacing soon. Only con is that the Km's are pretty high, 292,000. This guy wants 2500 but maybe could get it for 2000.

Anyone here owned one of these in a similar year? How reliable are they and is this motor at higher km's?

My wife owned an YJ from new, we got rid of it when it was about 13 years old as it didn't work very well for commuting. (4 cyl with manual required a lot of shifting in traffic) At that age it started to have a bunch of interior issues, basically stuff started falling apart. Eg. window cranks, window mechanism, seat belt latch. Keeping water out it every winter took some work even though it had a removable hard top. Fun off road though.

Those motors are generally pretty tough if its been looked after, more bottom end power depending on the gearing, I would worry most about the power options. If its a straight six then prob running the dana 35 in the rear which has been called week, only an issue if your planning on running it hard for 4x4ing. I have some alloy axles for the 35 that will up the strength a bit if you do get it. Ran them with an aussie locker with no probs but bad idea if you have a lead foot cause the ring and pinion is pretty small to. Compression test the engine and if its all good then you should be set, aside from obvious stuff, brakes n shit. They 4x4 well, my buddy is running my old aussie locker in his with the dana35 goes most any where in reason.

A friend of mine owned a 88 jeep xj. Sweet little guy, took it off road many times i.e: eagle, and stave.

It had about the same amount of KM's as the one your looking at. Ran very well and as far as I know the only thing that was worked on the motor was the head gasket.

I'd say you should be okay.

What are your plans with the Jeep?

i've tried sticking it in her butt and peeing, she feels that is more a gift for me than her.

i have a soft top '96 wrangler with a straight 6 4L 6 speed. It's a great engine. I take it to the shop (my friend owns a shop) once a year and it really never needs much. It has 112000 miles and still has a ton of life left. Starts up in brutal cold immediately. You do have to let it warm up though in winter. It absolutely hates running cold. Burns no oil at all. Literally none. Runs cool in the summer.

can't comment on anything else.

knock on wood.

My plan would be to use it for commuting to and from work… windy road type driving. Other than that, daily driver and shuttling trails/trail building. No really intense 4x4-ing planned though, but like being able to access areas via tough roads sometimes. From what i've read, the 4L is pretty reliable for over 300,000 k but I don't want to buy a vehicle if its pretty much at the end of its life, also for 292,000 im not sure if $2000 - $2500 is about right…

I used to have one of these
4wd failed and had everything tranny and diff replaced under warranty, it was great off road but basically sucked ass
Now i just daily drive this in the summer instead, i'd recommend it it much more than getting a new one, get a real jeep!

For the record, Jeep Cherokee Sport, not Jeep Grand Cherokee, if that matters to you.

I sold my 1991 XJ last winter for $2500, it was coming up on 300,000kms, but it had a brand new motor thrown in it at 190,000. I'd say that the asking price is a bit high for that mileage.

I love both of my XJs, both of them had the living sh*t driven out of them (logging-road-speed runs from Courtenay to Port Alberni) and never let me down.

Well since your looking into older vehicles, most will have high Km's, I would say get a yota, the motor itself last's forever, the body doesn't.

Yeah for sure, most vehicles that year seem to be about the same Km's.

As for the yota, I just sold an 87 pickup, but I think im over the older Toyotas. They seem to be overpriced (depending on who you ask, haha), usually rusted, and I don't have the 10k+ for a 2000 tacoma either.
