Heli just arrived and dropping water now.
Looks to me like they will get it sorted as the smoke is pretty localized.

While lightning accounted for over two thirds (or 1,234) of wildfires in 2015, many of the most destructive fires were caused by people, and therefore preventable.

Total estimated firefighting costs: $277 million

PS. It didn't happen if I can't google it.

We left our site today. It was insanely smoky and the fire started heading north.

We have to bus out to Edmonton.

Went through town. Looked like a war zone with all the abandoned vehicles. Many burned out. New motor bikes abandoned, buses just left in the ditch. I can't imagine what it was like driving out earlier this week. Total Mad Max style. North of town I saw some live areas…. Very creepy seeing the flames dancing and jumping between treetops.

Didn't see a tonne of structural damage along the highway. Most is further in off the highway. Did see a couple burned out trailer parks, hotels, a few houses.

A couple hours out of Edmonton now, have a flight booked for home at 11 tonight. Really hoping I make it, just want to see my wife and kids right now.

good to hear your safe.

"al Jesus"? Jewish terrrrrist sect?

I'm pretty sure Jesus was Mexican. Lots of Mexicans and other Latinos named Jesus. How many people have ever heard of or met a Jew named Jesus? It would be like finding a Muslim named Buster or Billy-Bob.

This message is hidden because Duncan is on your ignore list.

- I'm liking that, only took my over a decade to use that feature - congrats, you're my first.

My neighbour is saying that it is ground contained, choppers stopped for 45 min but now back out. Looking good thus far, that was too close for comfort.

Remember the days when people read the threads, and looked right above before they posted and said smart things? Amazing

Before and after satellite imagery of Fort Mac.

Incredible how in some places one house is gone, and the one next to it is fine (relatively).

Just chatted with a buddy his kid and his kids girlfriend and their tenants just lost everything they owned due to the fire . He managed to save his work truck and all his tools , but other than some legal documents and 3 vehicles they escaped in everything is gone .

My buddy said the phone call and images his son sent where horrifying , he credits their escape to his son knowing the area and smashing thru a service gate and bushwacking a bike trail to safety.

From the time of them seeing the flames on the horizon to barely getting out with their lives was 20 to 25min .

Horrible. Ground level photos look like something from a nuclear holocaust.

Even though some buildings look like they have no damage, there's probably a lot of smoke and/or heat damage. There's also the large amount of damage to the infrastructure; getting back to homes might take a long time after the fire is out.
