I'm reading the O Henry Awards compilation of short stories, the 2005 edition.
Another "what are you reading thread"
One River by Wade Davis. A must read.
Just finished the Englishmans Boy by Guy Vanderhaeghe. Meh. good but not great.
I have One River but never got into it. Maybe I'll try cracking it tonight.
I loved The Englishman's Boy! I was hoping Vanderhaeghe could perform again with the Last Crossing, but I've started it three times and have put it down after less than 5 chapters each time.
"the mother tongue, english and how it got that way" by bill bryson. I'm about halfway through and it's fantastic. I've learned a lot.
I just finished Jon Krakauer's "Under the Banner of Heaven, A Story of Violent Faith" about Mormon Fundamentalism. Another good read in which I learned that I knew nothing about the religion that made so many commercials that I used to see when I was a kid watching Saturday morning cartoons.
welcome to the bottom of my post.
The Blind Watchmaker - Richard Dawkins (read the god delusion and enjoyed it alot so I decided to pick up another one of his books)
and I just finished Leaven of Malice by Robertson Davies

I just bought the Last Crossing (used book stores and whiskey take all my money). not expecting much. I'll let you know. The Englishmans Boy was good, but lacking something. I don't know quite what?
Give One River a chance. Wade Davis is one of those people on my list of people I want to meet. so maybe there is a little hero worship going on. still a damn good book.
Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm.

K Vaugnagut just died, so I feel I should read Slaughterhouse 5. Anyone read this classic?

I either read it or started it. I think there are aliens or something. Odd.
I own it, anyway. I can't think of any details, so I don't think I got through it.

Read Slaughter House five and breakfast of champions. Both great and quick reads. Definitely start with SH5.
Picked up Hocus Pocus for this week.

Can you confirm aliens in Slaughter House Five? Or am I thinking of something totally different?

I've read all of Wade Davis' books. I really like the science and culture behind his books. I had the chance to see him do a reading at Malaspina University when he realeased The Clouded Leopard. I got him to sign my dog-eared, well worn, lent to everyone i know copy of One River. I think he liked seeing how well worn that book was. Plus the reading was awesome, as well as the question period and hanging around with him.

Be sure to read Vonnegut's introduction - it provides the context you need to understand how a book ostensibly about his time in a prison camp has almost nothing to do with his time in a prison camp. Go figure.
I just finished reading The Known World by Edward P. Jones, which was great. Amazing for a first novel.
