remember how we configured our soundcards in dos by selecting the right irq to play certain games in the 90s? i don't miss this time at all. and with the coming IoT i certainly don't want to configure each connected device separatly. if i get somethign new, i want to turn it on, log in and everything works the same on all devices. that doesn't mean i want "something basic".
Android vs. iOS
But the machine was designed before sound became a feature, and at least you were still able to add the sound card. Flexibility is the best thing that ever happened in computing, and open architecture like the IBM PC paved the way.
Anyway, this is applications software, and there are thousands of applications. No computer is going to come pre-installed with everything everyone could ever need. Canning a system into what you should have is presumptuous, and closed systems have never been nearly as successful as open systems.

too bad every new app usually releases on iOS first. somebody should tell them that they would make a lot more by using the open system where everyone can pirate their app /s
Not any more. There's now more apps for Android than iOS. The tide is changing, and for the better.
Just look at the Apple computer ecosystem. They got in really early but their market share is a tiny fraction of PCs.
Over time, openness provides better choice and more bang for the buck. Consumers gravitate towards that.

Who even uses apps. Number off apps is definitely not a selling feature of an operating system.
Ha Ha! Made you look.
Every program you run on a device is an "app".

I dunno, Apple is doing pretty well with a closed ecosystem and no tinkering philosophy.

How many apps are useful vs how many a just garbage.

doesn't your choice depend on what you wana do with the phone?

who needs market share when you get most of the revenue in both markets anyway?
yes, there are more "apps", but also a lot of shit apps no one ever uses. quality apps still release on ios first, because that's the place where you can actually sell your app, android users spent 4x less than ios users in the app stores. also, you only need to make the app for a few devices, instead of millions of variants in the very fragmented android market.

They had computers, then added media devices, then smartphone, then tablets, and now watches. Their sale of the small devices have been amazing, but I doubt it can continue. The sales of their media devices are way down (maybe a third of what there were five years ago). IMO, the trend will be like the computers where lower priced and more open alternatives will eat into their sales. It's already started on the tablet segment.

There's no doubt Apple generated huge revenue and profits, but that will be hard to sustain with the amount of competition that exists (and is coming - Chinese smartphone sales are going to take off, and emerging markets is huge).
As for app sales, Apple makes a lot more money on iOS, but Google is growing faster:

As for shit apps, both platforms have tons of them. A couple years ago the stats for the app store indicated that about half of the apps on the store had never been download, and of the apps that were downloaded about 25% were never used.

the same china that just overtook the us in ios downloads? the same china that sits behind the us and japan in 3rd spot in revenues? the same china google is not even present in with their play store?

also the revenue gap widens again, your 2012 numbers are outdated:

You are very passionate about apple. Lol.
Both are good devices/OS's.
I use like 4 apps. Chrome mobile for everything else.
