How about US Federal tax code, where you get to deduct mortgage interest against your income and have to pay tax on capital gains over $250k (500k for a couple) on sale of property? Sounds like a way to control speculation, but it didn't seem to make a dent in lead up to 2008. I guess, like Love and Justice, Greed is blind.
I think Americans were upgrading their homes fast as they could cuz the more they owe the bigger the tax saving, worked good until RE crashed in 08

fret not. the gov't that assessed that value has also raised the threshold to subsidize it. As along as your under 1.6 million, your good. Oh, if you try to change that or vote for someone who wants to reform the grant so that goes to ppl that ACTUALLY need it she'll lose money. So its best to maintain the status quo… and got $500 for looking the other way on all that jazz.

What do you mean? That the total assessment was for 3x what the assessed value of the building? That the assessment was for 3x what the construction cost 2 years ago?
My assessment is for 7x the stated value of the "building" for my detached home. Seems right relative to a newer townhouse that has a smaller footprint of land (which is where all the value resides). And my assessment isn't that much different (as a %) than my neighbours, who recently knocked down their house and built a killer new house.
Its all about the land.
With the ones sort of evaluation hikes,I wonder how many oldsters may not be capable of pay their belongings taxes?
