I didn't put anything "old" on my bike and I still didn't pay tons of money….I mean seriously, you plan on spending thousands on a bike and BRAKES is what you want to cheap out on?

You're comparing apples to oranges. There are lots of MTB hydro disc brake options, there are few Road hydro disc brake options (and those options aren't cheap). Also, saying that buying calipers is 'cheaping out' on a road bike is silly. If he's not riding in the rain, 20 year old 105 calipers will lock a wheel pretty damn fast.
Any decent caliper brake will require zero adjustment or maintenance. Zero. Maybe tighten the barrel adjuster to account for pad adjustment and eventually throw in new pads.

wtf sonny, I been riding in the rain in vancouver for some 35+ years I know how to keep it sanitary. :rolleyes:
I feel like when I'm ripping around in the rain on the bike, the amount of spray I get from cars would negate the effect of fenders. If I was on bike paths or trails, things would be different for sure.

^ This… road hydro levers/brakes are upwards of $800… and putting mtb levers on the road bike would be the suck.
That said, the modulation would be $$$, but I'm not time trialling down seymour, so I can deal with the calipers.

Mostly the lever… Road levers with integrated shifters (STI in shimano land), vs a lever+body + shifter in mountain bike land.
STI shifters are already not that cheap… add a hydro reservoir and it gets pretty expensive.

No c'mon, not completely. One has some choice on where to ride vis-a-vis car volume/road width etc. But your own tyre produced spray, you can control that utterly.

Unless you plan to shave your legs and road race or pull yourself on rides of 10,000 feet total elevation up over mountain passes, my advice is get a CX bike. My fastest ever 40km time trial (Olympic Distance triathlon) was on a cyclocross bike with slicks. Riding skinny tires offroad is a blast.

My CX and road bike are pretty comparable, but the road bike is just that might lighter, and thus, way more fun to ride when I'm on the road.
That said, my CX bike gets a ton of time on the road with slicks when the weather sucks, and it's great fun offroad as well.

Well it's less hideous than most other Cervelos (not hard though!) and the head tube is ideal for their target market. I just hope mirrors and a kickstand are easy to install.
