Brad Dean Support

I'm not sure if everyone is up to speed on the Brad Dean death in 2016. He was killed while riding with a group of cyclists on River Road in Richmond.

The sentencing for the driver is scheduled for May 15 and unfortunately the crown had decided to not pursue any criminal charges. He will likely get a 2000 fine and a one year driving prohibition. Riding on the road is always a gamble, but if guys like this can get away with it, nothing will change. If you can make it to the courthouse on that day, do it.

I probably won't be able to make it to the courthouse but are there other avenues that family/friends are pursuing to raise awareness of this event?

They have been trying to keep the local media in the loop and have been interviewed multiple times while attending hearings. Without the support of the crown, so there is not much left to do. Im a friend of the family and I wish I knew how to make something viral, but Im useless in that department.

I've made a post on my FB page and set it to public so anyone can see it. I'm also going to add a note that people who read it share it. Try  the same thing, one friend tells a few friends and so on and then it goes viral. The key of course is getting people to take interest. Maybe send Cam here an email, this isn't a roadie site but I believe a lot of the guys on here who mtb also spin on the road at times too.

Based on the public information around the evidence, it's disgusting that there wasn't a case for criminal charges. Anyone more familiar with the details on how that is possible?

There was a similar case in New Brunswick last year. No charges due to lack of evidence, but through the efforts of friends and cycling advocacy groups, it did result in the provincial government enacting "Ellen's Law", which requires vehicles to give cyclists 1 metre of clearance.  Difficult to enforce, but it could make charging someone who hits a cyclist easier in the future.
