1 X 9 and crank questions

I have the following stuff for a potential crossbike /commuter set up

a pair of saint cranks circa 2007 or a 105 crankset I can steal off my road bike

ideally I want to run 1x9 36 or 38 tooth front ring but I could live with the 39 on the 105. frame would be a traitor crusade.

would either of those work or do I need to buy a new crankset ? given id want an optimum chain-line if I had to pay up for new crankest what would I get? I have a near new X9 9 speed mtb shifter/cassette/derailleur as well

are you worried about dropping chains, or absolute chainline optimization?

either of those cranks should work - just use spacers (on the bb or chain ring) to dial the chainline in if necessary. if you can't get it dialed, square taper cranks are a budget option that allow for far more tuning because of the range of bb spindle lengths

i've got a 1x8 drive train on my commuter, with a 38 tooth dh ring on a set of xtr m950 cranks. never bothered with the chainline but it seems just fine

well I want a decent chainline for all my gears. just somthing that works well, im not racing.

Should be able to set up the 105's fine. Those Saints gotta be boat anchors.

What is the BCD on the 105's? If they are compact you can get a smaller ring than the 39.

39 front is probably a decent size if I run an 11-32 cassette out back.

I think the saints might be for a 83 mm shell anyway. Ill have to measure them.
