Hey everyone,

Posting this on behalf of my better half :)

The girlfiend is looking for a recommendation for a good bike for XC riding. the bike would be used exclusively for XC with short downhill sections and some tech riding. Don't really want the weight of an all-mountain so we are hoping to find a more XC specific bike.

What can you recommend for her?

I've starting riding the hubby's Heckler (2005) on my xc rides. It pedals so darn nicely, and handles the little bit of downhill that I throw at it too. My comparison is to an older (2003 Specialized Enduro), which I also enjoy but the Heckler just feels somewhat better to me.

Is she looking for something super light ? FS or Hardtail?

if it's mostly xc, get an xc bike.
having to pedal the bulk of a Heckler or other short travel freeride bike isn't that nice.
i got my wife a SC superlight, with a 5" travel fork. it's light, climbs well and can handle xc style DH with ease. i love riding it, even though it's a small, it was more mild mannered then my Elsworth Truth,

for a new bike, i like the Giant Trance series… a nice looking bike. or even a norco fluid

get your fav xc bike and just put a bigger fork on it 5 or 5.5 inch like a talus 32. Keeps the bike light and nimble for xc riding but gives you a little more padding to deal with the steep terrain and transitions…this is my fav type of bike…if you go too xc it will be crappy for the steeper lines and transitions…you can ride it at 3.5 on the ups then 4 inches for most any other terrain then dial it up to 5.5 for the gnarl…

Those aren't XC bikes…they're "all mountain" bikes.

Giant Anthem X FTW.

Hey sheffy…I think we've met! Recognized the screen name/nick name/location….Unless I'm mistaken. Might have rode with you a couple weekends ago at SS and crashed out…

Nice line of bikes from specialized…

i thought the trance X was AM, the trance is more XC, while the anthem was race XC?

I just got a Giant Cypher for my XC bike (about 28lbs I believe), rode it all weekend on Whistler XC trails and it was awesome, light enough to peddle up but hardy enough to handle the downhill.

Check first with the manufacturers recommended travel as you could void your warranty.

So many great options out there, pretty much every manufacturer has something that will fit the bill, Santa Cruz Superlight or Cannondale Rush for Single pivot options, Giant Trance, Cannondale Rize, Specialized Stumpjumper or Trek Fuel. Too many great options. My wife is riding a Rize Carbon 2 an it is awesome, 26 lbs with 130mm Travel. Take some for a test ride and see which one feel the best.
