I find the trick is getting the right balance pre ride. If I eat more I inevitably suffer on the climb because I'm digesting but half an hour later I'm really glad for the extra calories. I don't carry a lot of body fat so when I run out of fuel I crash hard. I do love vanilla Clif Shots.
