Are we actually debating this?
Really?
I thought we (NBR peeps) mostly got that the scientific method and clinical studies were reliable…

I don't think enduramil's original post is actually meant to open a debate on this topic, even though the thread title alludes to it. But I think it's an important conversation to have, considering books like this one are being published in 2012, and fucking shame on Amazon for selling it…
"Melanie's Marvelous Measles was written to educate children on the benefits of having measles and how you can heal from them naturally and successfully. Often today, we are being bombarded with messages from vested interests to fear all diseases in order for someone to sell some potion or vaccine, when, in fact, history shows that in industrialized countries, these diseases are quite benign and, according to natural health sources, beneficial to the body. Having raised three children vaccine-free and childhood disease-free, I have experienced many times when my children's vaccinated peers succumb to the childhood diseases they were vaccinated against. Surprisingly, there were times when my unvaccinated children were blamed for their peers' sickness. Something which is just not possible when they didn't have the diseases at all. Stephanie Messenger lives in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and devotes her life to educating people about vaccine dangers and supporting families in their natural health choices. She has the support of many natural therapists and natural-minded doctors."

The five star comments on that book are awesome.

Read some schools just in Toronto have a exemption rate of 40% from vaccination. Am I missing something here? Or have we become so far removed from watching others die from diseases we halted that we think they are extinct.
I think portions of the population have no idea how vaccines work, assuming that they somehow make the germs that cause diseases magically disappear from the universe. The end result being that when they hear a statement like "Polio has been eradicated" their conclusion is "Why does my kid need a shot for polio, if they're never going to get it?"
I haven't read Melanie's Marvelous Measles but i did enjoy Amy's Awesome AIDS.
As a new father with an 18-month old daughter and another on the way, I can't believe a lot of the misinformation anti-vaxxer types push regarding vaccines, their safety, and their efficacy. They use that misinformation to put fear into gullible people who would seemingly rather have a dead child than an autistic child.
Think about that for a second. Some people believe vaccines can cause autism. Even if that were true, that means the anti-vaxxer crowd would rather risk their child's life than have them potentially become autistic. They would rather their child die, than be alive with autism. What. The. Fuck. The rage this fills me with is hard to put into words.
Think that makes you mad? How do you think that makes autistics feel?
Thank frickin' god there is no fool on here spouting anti-vaccine nonsense. Saved me a face palm tonight.
The older I get and the longer I work as a teacher the less difficult it is for me to think that some people should rather not have any children at all.
This takes tin-foiling to a whole new level of stupidity - and it is sad that such nonsense is happening at all.

He'd be soooo flamed and neg-rep bombed that some of us would probably have to take a break from the boards due to The Ban Stick.

Why are we allowing unvaccinated children in school?
Conversely, why are vaccinated kids at risk from unvaccinated kids?

Who misses the old days of polio and smallpox?
The current measles outbreak in the US is predominantly in vaccinated people? Polio also made an appearance last year. Same with cholera in the Carib; no small pox other than old vials being shipped around though.

When many people suffer from a delusion, it is called religion.
