Honestly, take what you can get, just do it regularly. Even if just 5K or 1/2 hour runs a couple of times a week.

Try early mornings or evening runs w/a headlamp. This has been a great year so far for running/biking conditions, so just get out there.

So I went ahead and joined my first run clinic… My second class is tonight, the first class went well. We did some speedwork/repeats, which was fun. We ended up doing much more distance than I thought we would have - which is great. It's always nice when a run doesn't feel as difficult or as long as it turns out to be. Hope to run in the Victoria half-marathon in October… I'll hopefully stay healthy enough [HTML_REMOVED] injury free so I can try and complete a marathon in 2017.

Which clinic? BTW, they run clinics out of Fortius as part of a running study, the clinics are free and you get a fitness tracker.

That's great. Hopefully you are also working on technique. It's a game changer.

It's the Run Faster clinic out of New Balance Delta.

@Brock - technique??? I don't have any technique. I've got a decades worth of skateboarding injuries and another decade worth of mountain bike injuries along with deformed feet that require orthotics to contend with… I run like a water buffalo :)

I think I pinched a nerve too. I was camping a couple weeks ago and one morning my right leg from my butt down just went numb and I couldn't bear wait. It was like that for 20 minutes and then all of a sudden I could walk again. Things felt fine so I went for a 13k run and have done a few longer runs since then but now my right hip is kind of sore. Not sure what's going on - I chalk it up to turning 41. Aging sucks.

Technique helps (a lot)
Right hip sore your about the same age as me I pulled all of the hip through to glut and hamstring type muscles getting carried away last weekend. You will be wanting to stretch the piriformis and hip flexor and abductors amongst other things or you could take an hour to warm up which is what I was doing!
Lots of good advice on form out there a session at Distance Runwear on the natural treadmill is a good start or watch this video

A session with Dave on that manual treadmill was the best 50 bucks I've ever spent.

so…this thread is a little old, I though I might revive it. Bought a new pair of running shoes a few weeks ago while road tripping in South Tyrol with my little son. Dynafit MS Feline Vertical they are called, equipped with a Vibram sole - and just incredibly comfy.

Anyways, living at a new place since my live has had a major turn around in early summer, and am in the second week of running every morning after having had a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Keeps me sane at the moment, more so than riding. Lots of stuff to take care of.

Anyways, am running about 4.5 to 5 km, in roughly 35 min. depending on if I walk the ascents or not. It is basically just down a hill and back up again with some flat stretches thrown in for good measure.
Right now I just want to get back into a groove and do not push my body too hard.

How are you guys doing? Planning on taking part in races? Any new or old goals?

I'm a couple years older, in better shape than I was 10 years ago.
I used to run like a caveman, had injuries galore, plantar fascitis was insane. I switched over to a midfoot strike shoe, paid for a running coach to work on my technique, large results…. Instead of hammering on my heels, upper body moving all over the place, energy going up and down. I now glide forward, way less effort, way smoother, easier on the body. Takes a while but makes a shit ton of difference. Also running on gravel paths is way easier on the joints.

That short edit hit a string. And I thought why not share it with you guys.

been running a lot lately, not long lengths, but 6-10km i guess. rolled my ankle on dead moped (burnaby mtn) today which sucked for a bit and hope it is fine tomorrow. salmon are running up stoney creek; pretty amazing. sometimes weird being the runner, not the mountain biker. need to find better gear than my mtb shorts and cotton underwear maybe

I haven't done any running since early summer when I seriously jammed one of my big toenails (still black) on a long uphill hike. Lesson learned. For trail running, always buy a 1/2 size (or more) larger shoe to compensate for swelling and trail descents.

I will be getting back into running this winter. Hopefully we get some light snow. There is nothing more fun than trail running on a blanket of fresh snow.

Just thought I would throw a good winter evening run route out there. Start at the Pemberton station and do the spirit trail -Ambleside seawall to Dundarave and back. It's well lit and a really nice scenic flat run. Usually not many people on it this time of year, so it feels like getting away from the city without leaving it.

Yes, I hope for a little snow over here as well. The last few years were too warm. I really like going for a long hike as soon as the ground is covered and the sky is blue, nothing wrong with running or biking as well. Ah, the choices.

Right now I plan on coming to Vancouver and SW BC next year, probably late Spring/early summer.

Maybe some of you want to join me for a run?
