Something in the woods

Hey all

We are having a new experience with out youngest son who is 4 years old.

Up until now he has never had any kind of allergies to speak of and has been playing
all the time up on Fromme climbing around all the structures on trails like Boundary.

Last weekend while up on Boundary he was up climbing around on the wood work, which this time of year is a little green with all the rain.

So we stop and he was hungry so I gave him a snack. Well in no more than 5 minutes he broke right out in hives all over his hands and face. As we are heading down on the way to a clinic "20 minutes or so" it goes away.

Yesterday we are walking through Princess Park "base of Fromme" and he is playing in the forest and again the hives show up but much worse and all over his body. Again we rush to clinic but while waiting "30 min or so" it goes away.

We are going to a specialist next week to get to the root of this but…

Has anyone heard of this happening?

First thing that comes to mind would be Poison Ivy or Oak. Was he itchy at all?

this was the first thing that came to mind as well. He might just have to wear gloves when he's old enough to help you split shakes, Ken ;)

It may not be something in the woods… We switched dryer sheets a while back and noticed that after playing hard, getting warmed up a bit, our son (3yrs) would get hives.

This happened a couple times and while I was at the pharmacy getting calomine lotion I mentioned it to the Pharmacist… The dryer sheets were the first thing she asked about…

I never would have put 2 and 2 together and probably blamed it on something to do with the park (fertilizers/pesticides), but as soon as I stopped using those dryer sheets the hives never came back.

Or it could have everything to do with the woods… I'm just saying that correlation doesn't always mean causation…

Can you remember what your kid ate in the previous 24 hours before that? Was it packaged and do you still have the ingredient list for it? Write it all down for future talks to an allergist.

My girlfriend is allergic to Sulfites and breaks out in hives after eating food that contain them. (And Sulfites are in everything). It usually takes a few hours to appear though so it's always a guessing game which food had them in it. Sulfites are listed on Health Canada's website as one of their top 10 food allergy concerns. They consider it a higher threat to Canadians then agast gluten. The allergy starts showing up quite often in kids about your sons age. Although NBR is full of useful PHD level information this really is worthy of a trip to a real doctor.

I thought chemtrails caused this sort of thing?

This trip to Kelowna was definately an undertaking - Liam and I had been planning this project for 24 hours. We worked really hard to pull out all the stops in this video. We had slo-mo goggle shots; time lapses; pedal flips; outrageous product shots; unloading and loading the bike; walking through the field with your hand in wheat. At the end of the day this trip was all about just getting out and riding with all my friends.

Thanks for all the replies

No dryer sheets in our house. I will see if we changed detergents.

Never came into contact with Poison Ivy or Oak on Fromme and my guess is that it would not just go away after 20 minutes.

Cookies were home made "chocolate chip"

I am praying it's not a cedar allergy.

Will update when we know more in case this does happen to any other little people out playing in the woods.

I've heard of kids reacting to cold temperatures with a hive-like reaction. It doesn't sound like and allergy as those symptoms tend to last for a few days.

So we might have found the source.

Oxyclean was used after we had spent a week camping over Xmas to get the smoke out of all the cloths. Until now we never had used this product before.

This might be what caused the rash "on his winter coat, gloves and hat.

Cedar is his friend again after full day making rungs with no rash :)

That is great news! The future of Fromme looks bright.

is going big on a bike the only way to get you stoked on the sport? what happened to riding with your bros, travelling, and riding unique places, to get people stoked on riding?

fines are useless. there needs to be more punches to the throat.

I'm allergic to two things. Cats and cedar.

Dammit.
