So, ADD is really a way to sell more pills and market to new market places?

i think it's not so much the drugs that are the problem, but the way they are overprescribed in the zeal to make big profits. for the people that genuinely need help these medications can be a real help. it's a question of putting people before profits.
personally, i've debated the idea of stimulants for ADD for quite a number of years and have always erred to the side of no. however, i'm now at a point where it makes sense for me to try them and i wonder if it's something i should have started years ago. i do feel that the decision to start these types of medications should come as a last or close to last resort though after other methods for personal improvement have been tried.
i can easily say that for those who do suffer with ADD, it can be quite debilitating wrt to one's ability to lead a rewarding life.
We don't know what our limits are, so to start something with the idea of being limited actually ends up limiting us.

Looking at the symptoms for ADD and ADHD, there is not one person I have met that doesn't have it.
I don't see this as needing drugs but needing neurological tools to help people cope and change their self perceptions and reactions to the outside world.
Just remember it wasn't long ago that smoking was prescribed to pregnant women.

my mom is pretty convinced that I had add/adhd growing up, pre-drug era for it though….she treated it with discipline and patience. I'm convinced I still have it, still don't need to resort to giving pharmaceutical companies any of my money to deal with it.

One of the best decisions I made around this was to stop listening and reading all the info the "experts" put out. Unfortunately it took a long time to figure that one out.

Wouldn't say you where pre drug era as they where already giving drugs for it in 1984.
A lot of the ADD stuff is less about the drugs and more the people you surround yourself with. So you where fortunate that your parents used discipline and patience to work with the problem. They had the back bone to stick with it. Unfortunately there are more parents who want the easier path.

to a degree everybody does exhibit some of the symptoms sometimes, but there is a difference between exhibiting occaisonal symptoms and those symptoms happening on a frequent enough basis that they disrupt one's ability to function effectively. it' not so much whether the symptoms are present, but whether one can control the symptoms or not.

I'm sure alot of the kids with "mild" add or adhd would notice positive changes if they're parents forced them outside to burn off some energy instead of sticking them in front of a TV with a bowl of sugar-o's.

Didn't they call those Farm Chores back when you where a kid? I mean, come on. The fields don't just cover themselves in manure.:P:P

the lawn certainly didn't mow itself, and the garden certainly didn't weed and hoe itself….kids these days! uphill both ways! barefoot in the SNOW!

many, all 4 of us…I'll freely admit I don't have a fucking clue…yeah I know that these drugs help some people whom really need it, there are also many many people whom get 'diagnosed' and drugged who don't need it.
I'm also of the belief that doctors over prescribe medication that alters brain chemistry. It should be a last resort, not a first step.
