Ruck March

I hate running. Any of you do this? I just picked up a sack of barite and taped the hell out of it to hold it together for a few years, now I have an 88 lb brick in the shape of a cement bag. Stuffed it into a hiking pack, now I look like a jack ass quick marching my fat ass through the hilliest neighborhoods in Calgary, up and down the elbow valley wall for 5-7 km at a go.

Rough calculations tell me that my fat + the added weight = 800 calories / hour, and I'm just adding more weight as I lose it, in 10 lb increments. Once I'm back at my fighting weight, I'll use it as resistance until I reach a total of 200 lb packs. I was in the best shape of my life when I was building trails out there on the coast… I'm guessing the chainsaws, shovels, pails of nails, etc being packed up mountain faces helped a fair amount, clued in that military style rucking was probably as close to a replication as I can get without spending the time actually building trail, as long as I follow the rule of doing pushups or situps every mile.

That is very legit. Your knees will likely be the first to tell you you're a cunt, at which point you should probably listen and rest a bit more.

They've never been the issue, my left ankle is the reason I got fat. Well, blaming my left ankle is the reason I got fat - I crushed it on a snowboarding jump then failed to see a physician, let it heal poorly. I did something similar to my right shoulder.

There's a high probability your knees are going to start complaining if you do this with any sort of regularity. I'm just saying it's no reason to stop, just add a little more rest in.

You're probably right, noted.

I like this. I've been thinking about adding some weight to my motion. No big rucksacks but I wanna try running a few k with a pair of small dumbbells and see how that feels.

My right ankle made me fat, although my injury was volleyball not snowboarding. That said, I did a race called the Mountain Man Challenge back in 2002 after my injury. It's a ~50km race with a ruck (35lb for ~32km, 105lbs for ~3.5km, 10km canoe paddle, then 35lb for ~6km back then, not sure if it's changed). Between that and rock climbing I was probably in the best shape of my life back then as well, injury notwithstanding. I've been getting back into rucking, and while it hurts, it's not as hard on my ankle as running is. I'd suggest going easy on the weight though, work more on 20-30% of your bodyweight with a fast pace, and then work up the weight from there. Your body needs time to adapt to the weight and while muscle adapts relatively quickly, bone and supporting tissue takes longer.

Being cheap is OK. Being a clueless sanctimonious condescending douchebag is just Vlad's MO.

One of the local breweries has an annual "growler run". 10k with two full 64oz growlers. Winner gets free beer for a month.

Ahhh.

They need to up the stakes. The more you carry, the more the winner takes home.

My daughters bring home multiple growlers for me.

They're still five to seven years out for that. But mentally those fuckers will be in their 50's when that time comes if I have any say in the matter.

The first year, anyone who completed the race carrying growlers got two free fills a week for a month. 24 of 25 people did it, which I don't think they expected. They dialled it back to just the winners the second year.
