Is there anyone left here that likes to pick up heavy things just cause it's fun?

I tend to utilize simple machines whilst doing so.

As you get older, you would be wise to use proper lifting techniques.

As you get older, you'd be wise to start lifting the major compound movements regularly for the rest of your life.

Yep. But, I haven't been to the gym in almost two months. Back to back flus followed by a cold, followed by Christmas, followed by an epic storm cycle followed by being a lazy piece of shit.

Need to start going again, I notice a reduction in mobility and longer recovery time from skiing when I am not going to the gym and lifting regularly.

Yes...but I had a nice prolapsed disc L5S1 with severe ischiatic pain. Spent a week in hospital in December. But thankfully no surgery.

So no heavy lifting for me, nor my beloved swings.

But about to start going to the gym again this coming monday. I am happy that I rode about 50 km last week without any discomfort or pain.

Heavy days are long behind me but still train regularly. Mostly HIIT, big supersets with active recovery. Still lots of deadlifts, squats, presses and pullups but no more "let's see how much I can lift" days.

Deadlifts, squats and presses are so fucking important for tendon and ligament growth.

My focus is shifting towards, how many can I do of this weight (while hoping that number is 3-8).  If not, there's no progression and tendonitis or somesuch will likely be the result.

These days I'm paying the price for a lifetime of poor posture and 10 years hunched over a desk. My shoulders have rolled forward and I've had a couple of rotator cuff injuries over the past couple of years, currently rehabbing one now. This year's goal is to correct and strengthen.

If you want better shoulders, google Eric Cressey.

Sucks man. I did a L5/S1 partial herniation back in 2010 by deadlifting with garbage form, took about 11 months to heal without much physical activity and lots of sciatica pain. Haven't maxed out on anything since other than snatches and clean and jerk. These days it's just maintenance which is kinda boring but necessary as a desk sitter.

If you enjoyed it, I'd suggest learning the proper form and jumping back in.  I'm going to turn 45 this year and I just pulled my deadlift PR with ease today.  It's going to be nuked next time I get to test it out.

Can't wait.

Yeah, I did something really, really stupid - was basically distracted by a beautiful woman while putting two 40kgs dumbbells away after a farmer's walk. I simply lost my form.

What I find interesting is that you do not dare maxing out except in the quick ones although these are way more challenging for the body/spine/muscles/coordination than an "ordinary" DL or squat. Have you ever tried a max DL since then at all?

Right now my PT tells me not to do any ballistic/quick stuff but focus on stability with ass little compression, shear and torque as possible... and I love high pulls with a clean grip and kettlebell swings. Guess, I do not try them until late summer. Really scared of surgery.
