Shipping is always a killer :(

Consider shipping to Blaine, WA and picking everything up yourself. Though that might make less sense now with the CAD shitting the bed. If you go that route, 5dpackages in Blaine is $2 to pick-up.

Some other equipment companies worth checking out that might have competitive shipping (not all have iron though)

and last but not least, don't forget your fractional plates: http://ironwoodyfitness.com/products/olympic-2-in-fractional-plates Worth their weight in training gold :)

imo there's no reason to spend the extra cash. if you're worried about tolerances bring a bathroom scale to the store with you to make sure that your matching plates are the same weight, or at least within 1/4 pound of each other.

if you're going to spend extra cash, quality bumper plates are the place to put it.

Syncro pretty much sums it up.

Invest in a horse stall matt for the floor. It will protect the plates and your floors when doing dead lifts, cleans, and such.

yup yup

just put 4 of them in my bike/workout room , will be putting a few more today to finish off the rest of the floor , not cheap around $650. to do a 11'x19' area . i bought them at the CO-OP on Harris RD in Pitt meadows , they have them in 4'x6' and 5'x7'sizes and are 3/4" thick . pure dead weight to move and work with .

4'x6' are $69 each 5'x7' are $90 each they are made by North West Rubber matts in ABBY and they cal them RED BARN MAT.

Remember a place I worked at 12 years ago…Pattison sign shop.

The welding shop guys had their own little work out stuff for lunch breaks. They had fabricated up their own DIY Olympic bar. Good enough for deadlifts, benching, and squats. One of the guys made one for his home use identical. Can't recall how they did it exactly but had made the ends big enough for Olympic plates.

They offered to make one for some bike work I did for them. Kicking myself for not following through now.

Thanks will save that for future reference.

Also keep stalking your local Kijiji and Craigslist. And if you are having to drive to another town check theirs as well. Stuff like this will pop up and you will miss out.

I ended up buying this set:

Fitness Depot 300lb set

I upgraded the bar to this one as well.

Black lifetime bar

Now I just need to find some 1.25 lb plates that aren't $50.

I've never had a need for those and I don't think you do either.

Either do more reps at a lower weight, or do less reps at the new higher weight..

yup.

if it's really that important to you though jett_mike, take a wire coat hanger and use it as a hook to hang something that weighs about a pound off the bar. this way you can micro adjust the weight as much as you want.

Can't recall exactly the strength training forum I saw it on…wasn't Crossfit though. Guy took chunks of bike inner tub filled to weight with sand as a cheap solution.

What did they charge to upgrade the bar? I see the black bar is proper 44llbs, any other difference?

The included bar has an $80 value, so they charged the extra $50 to go with the other. You can swap out any bar they carry, you just pay the difference. The basic bar is rated at 300 lbs max, has no warranty, has bolted sleeves, and generally feels like shit.
