My dad tore both of his (different times) and I believe that if you let it heal properly then it is actually stronger than it was to begin with and the chance of subsequent injury is reduced. He did, however, suffer from a lot of loss of muscle mass.
hamstrings and cycling...
you guys are scaring the crap outta me. the size of the bruise it's firmness and discomfort are sending me scurrying back to the doctor tomorrow morning and the physio in the afternoon. doc is a great guy but i feel this needs a second look and specific heat/ice advice, which i didn't get. i'm rather concerned about this blood pooling clotting issue and i'm sure (whole back of leg is purple) that there is considerable fluid pooling up.
If you're currently seeing your family doc, consider seeking a referral to a sports doc.

Absolutely. And make sure too if you get an ultrasound, that it's done by somebody that is good with sports injuries. You'd need a doppler scan to check for clots in the vein.
ditto with a rehab facility find one with people who are trained in sports specific , the guy i use rides bikes and has a better understanding of the injury , same with my doctor he,s a sports related in training

Not wrong. Just missing facts also called made an assumption.
But thank you for telling me that what my wife learned is wrong. Have a nice day.:)
Maybe next time you won't make assumptions… especially when someone is trying to help others with their info. With any potential of blood clots, it would be way better to err on the side of caution.

X 4.
Family doc will tell you…stop doing the activity meaning quit completely. A doctor who understands sport will have better solutions then quit.

Have you been elevating the leg as well?
i'm elevating it right now, with heat. then i'll go for a short spin on the bike on flat roads, which feels ok. my doc is a family doc with a dip. sports med. i looked it up, hard to tell how much it means but it definitely requires an expensive exam and a bunch of prereqs. he's also the advising doc for a reputable physio clinic in town, where the guys have a whole dam alphabet after their names. all MSC types.
i'm going back to see him first thing in the morning then the physio in the afternoon. i could be over reacting but i want a second look at it and a more directive course of action given the firm swelling and disgusting look of it. this blood clot thing has me fully concernicus.
I think being aware and acting on that awareness and you should be all good. While the advice of NBR is all knowing….it's always good to get an actually experts second opinion on these types of things. When I first took a look at the photo you posted, I was sure you had Lupus.
Plus its always nice to correct the dr. with…."Enduramil says you're wrong"
Sorry Enduramil, I had to use that one.
This is a really weird thread.

This is a really weird thread.
Informing someone of a possible, sometimes unnoticed, life-threatening condition is weird? May we all live in weird times.
I had a complete rupture (3rd Deg tear) of my proximal semitendinosus section of my left hamstring from an electric chair submission. My hip dislocated and the joint struck the stretched muscle rupturing it. I think if I was properly warmed up it would have been far less impactful. If it was a complete evulsion they could have re-inserted it to my pelvis but it was a muscle rupture. Surgery is less common with muscle tears and some surgeons tend not to feel like they work at all. Some disagree. My sports medicine doctor opted for no surgery. That still may have been a mistake, IMHO. My repair was via non surgical rehabilitation. The injury is devastating when you get a grasp of what actually happened.
My bruising was significant. I was out for about three months. Without extensive and skilled rehab you cannot expect to have much function afterwards. BUT, if you stick with it you can have pretty good recovery and have almost all of your functional strength and mobility return.
i can ride, dirt bike, snow board, ski and work out. I am not a runner, so i did not miss it. Everyone is different and every injury is different but considering how bad is was im ok with the extent of my recovery.
I did not have any blood clots to my knowledge. i have had far worse bruising from other injuries and to my knowledge did not have clotting then either. I was not aware of the dangers of clots at any point. It may be something to consider.
WTF, Over?
from an electric chair submission.
what?
what?
sexy time….Haha No.
BJJ. I tried to look for a image or vid that was not completely homo erotic but i could not find one. Basically a ju-jitsu submission attacking the hip/groin/hami. i should have just said i did it running for a bus.:)
But my point was, that you can recover from even a very bad tear.
WTF, Over?
