The "cardio" portion of my training is actually call Energy Systems Development.
2015 New Years fitness resolutions
I wish all I had to do was strength training. Weights are way more fun than spinning.
I still contend the majority here need to do strength training over cardio. If the activities you enjoy doing are energy-system dependent, you're going to cover it while you do it. How are you gaining strength? Pro-tip: It's the exact opposite of what you're doing.
I'm gonna make bone-density cool again.
maybe, but that depends on what people's activity goals are and what their current levels of functional strength are.
if someone wants to ride further or faster then a cardio specific training program should take precedence over strength training - which I agree should be included.
We don't know what our limits are, so to start something with the idea of being limited actually ends up limiting us.

But whenever I wanted to ride farther or climb higher, I just kept doing it. Nothing I did on a hamster wheel ever helped it.

you're probably already fit enough that your cardio training should be called pain management development.

That's what I was referring to.

Spinning won't help your climbing . Climbing will help your climbing.
I don't do the resolution thing either. I just plan to keep doing what I have already been doing since October.

yeah, I didn't advocate spending time on a treadmill or spin bike. even though they can help they shouldn't be the primary training mode.

But picking really heavy things up and putting them down again did help. And it doesn't need to be done a lot. At all. Just like 20 time a year. It's a no brainer.

spinning can help as it allows you to be able to set a pace and maintain it. it should only be assistance work or maybe used in place of on bike workouts in case of inclement weather or scheduling/time constraints.

I know that, and I don't recall saying otherwise.

We virtually know each other well enough to know that we agree on this. But it's a contentious topic here and it needs to be repeated.
- And by here, I mean everywhere.

I agree, but at least be clear in the context with which you sell the message. your original post seemed to eschew developing some sort of cardio plan and to just add lifting weights. what the op needs is to have defined training goals and a cardio plan with an added strength component to meet those goals. she's probably reached a point where "just go out and ride" isn't going to work anymore.

No, not at all. If you are here, it's because you like bikes. This isn't chips-and-tv.com. If you like bikes, you are so far ahead of everyone else it isn't funny. You are riding bikes and enjoying the time out, you are doing energy systems work.
It's like I go to bodybuilding.com and find ways to do strength training outside of the times I do strength training.
