Of Canadians exercise hard enough to need an electrolyte replacement drink.

Are you one of them?

If my workplace is a sample of the population, then I would say that less than 2% of Canadians actually work out hard enough to reap any fitness benefit.

You typically only want that stuff when you have drained your stores of glycogen in your liver. This would typically be after the 3+ hours of high-intensity aerobic activity. Basically running a marathon or a 3+ straight hours of pedalling a bike at your racing pace.

Otherwise, its like American/Canadian football players breathing oxygen out of a tank (you don't see that much anymore on the sidelines) - its pointless since their activity is virtually all anaerobic.

Those electrolytes/salts aren't necessarily good for you … sports drinks are blamed for the alarming rise in incidence of kidney stones in young children.

Are you one of them?

I just drink them to look cool and health conscious.

This is similar to what I do in summer. Only difference is I add salt when I put in in a water bottle. Started that part as Gabi will drink it no problem as it is.

On a long road ride, I'll fill a small bottle with Gu Brew, on a long mtn bike ride I might throw a cage on and do the same thing.

Its close to impossible to drink that stuff on a short ride though
