XTR Trail Pedals - WTF?
I've also had my right XTR pedal implode and come off the spindle mid ride. Warranty replaced, sold 'em, and started rocking flat pedals…

the markedly superior ease of entry and exit on the dx is worth the bit of extra weight. you don't have to crank the tension to avoid pre-lease. xtr's are more awkward to get into, and they pre-release like crazy, requiring higher tension, making them even more awkward. xt is similar. at least that's been my experience.
I agree with Clark in that DX's are way easier to get in and out of. They also feel more stable due to the shoe contact. I tried some non-Trails recently and after a couple of years on Trails I was surprised how little the difference in feel is.
I think I'll run non-Trails on trail bike and DX's on the AM this season.

Another vote for the dx's. I've been running mine for years and they're still going strong. I'm ok with a little extra weight if it means durability, a stable platform, and predictable engagement and release.
Since they moved to the narrower spindle (eliminated removal with a pedal wrench) I've found the XTs have a habit of coming off the spindle. This was never the case with any of my previous XT pedals (nothing but since the first 797 pedals) so I'm a bit disappointed in Shimano. I still run them, but have to check them every now and again to make sure they're attached to the spindle.
If anyone needs a left side XTR trail pedal (or 2) I have one for you… very, very cheap…
I have been running the M530 SLX trail pedal for two years now with no issues. quite a bit heavier then the XT or XTR pedals, but cheaper and possibly more durable. they will most likely blow up today now that I have claimed.
Just a speculative fiction. No cause for alarm.

Hmmm, come to think of it, I believe all the ones I've broken were rights as well!
Also broke a RH XTR trail pedal. Got warranted through CRC, easily. Now on XT with no issues.

I need to send mine in as well… but in the mean time I ordered some XT trails from TBS Bike Parts… $87… can't beat that locally.. one day shipping from Kelowna as well.

Yes… the first one that broke on me resulted in a very long walk out of the bush. Second one broke in my driveway. The pedal body basically just falls off the spindle, along with the bearings.
Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be replacing these before that happens. I wanted to go to a cageless pedal anyway in order to save a bit of rotational weight.

The locking nuts at the end of the spindle are what broke for me. Check out the "exploded" diagram (heeheehee).
