X0 Brake levers

My buddy recent bought a used bike equipped with XO brakes . Both levers need replacing, Caps says levers aren't available to order and his best bet is new brakes for around 350. They also said elixir brake levers will cause a loss in power. Where can he get replacement levers, or is he going to have to replace the brakes.

( The original problem was the levers would push out to far, ( as in beyond the reach of fingers) the spring/clip to keep them in (he thought) was worn out. Anyways, the shop told him something inside is stripped or something like that and cannot be rebuilt)

Long story short, his wife will kill him if he has to spend a bunch of money on a bike he just bought. So I figured I would post this for him.

That sounds ridiculous to me. It sounds like the exact same problem I have with one of my levers right now that I have been too lazy to fix. I'm guessing it's the same problem that used to plague the old Hayes 9's with the piston popping past a washer in the lever body. I'll fix it myself soon and can post pictures and hopefully it's the same problem.

Start with knowing what part number you need. I assume you're looking for just the lever blade, and not the whole lever assembly?

(check the sram site for other model years)

(no, it likely can't be ordered locally), but…

Avid, 11.5018.005.001, X0 Trail, Lever internals can be ordered locally through your LBS from Lambert, but only 1 in stock, and that won't help you if something else not in the kit is busted.

If the problem is the levers push out too far, it might be the snap ring that's busted, not holding in the internals. A replacement snap ring might be all you need, but the stock one is plastic and to replace it with steel might end up f'n things up.

He needs a new bike. Go to LBS and solve problem. ;)

I believe X0 levers (not trails) are the same as Elixir 7's or 9's so should be a straight swap.

What happens is the lever reach adjust screw with the ball end sits inside a piston actuator that's made of plastic. This wears out and doesn't have enough friction to hold the ball end a lever falls away from the bar.

There are a number of pistion internal variants. You need the correct one and they look very similar. The best way to ensure you get the right one is to disassemble the lever by removing the blade first and then the piston/bladder assembly. Then take the whole thing to a real bike shop like Steed or Obsession.

Great advice. Just took my own lever assembly apart (after my snap ring pliers didn't fit leading to cursing and swearing but eventually fiddled it out with a flat head screw driver) only to find out the plunger just fits into the whole assembly and that I need these parts.

Have a good look at the end of the piston, where the return spring meets the piston in the diagram. That's the part that slightly varies on model years.

That said I believe the ball ended reach adjust was only slotted on the 2013's.

Got a quote from obsession for 175 to fix them. So new brakes it is!
