i have an x-king 2.4 bc compound in the rear and i like it very much!
nice rolling, good grip in wet and dry and quite durable.
i think of trying the rock razor (pacestar) as a change or the ardent race.
are these better rolling than the x-king? what about grip?
Ardent races are great tires. Corner we'll, roll quickly and aren't scary like the regular Ardent.
I like the rock razor alot but im running it in trailstar. I ride it on the rear for shore with no problems. I use my front tire for braking.
I have a friend on the pacestar and he hated it.
I also love the rock razor as a rear tire. It is so fast, yet the side knobs really bite.
Just lean it over and there is traction.
Gets funny in the wet, but is manageable.
Don't forget the Mavic Roam, which is quite similar in concept to the rock razor.
Although i seriously doubt that any of the two roll quite as fast as an X-King. The x king is a cross-country-race tire, fast as hell but not nearly as tough as the heavier trail tires like the rock razor.

I'm looking at the new Ardent 2.25 EXO dual compound 29er tire because I need a slightly narrower rear tire that will still fit my bike when mounted on a 35mm rim.

Ardent Race, 29x2.2 EXO/3C is light at 720g. The HR2 2.3 EXO/3C is like 900g. What accounts for that weight difference? Does EXO mean slightly different things between the XC and AM application?

The Ardent 2.4 is a different animal than the 2.25. It's still not the best but doesn't have that dump-you-on-your-face transitional cornering ability that the regular Ardent has.

The Ardents have almost nothing for transitional cornering knobs. At full lean they bite very well but most of our trails require lots of cornering at lower speeds on the transitional knobs so the Ardnt 2.25 can be scary because it simply lets go. It is bearable as a rear tire because it rolls well but I wouldn't touch it as a summer tire except for dry XC riding and even then you can't push it hard..

Both casing size and the amount of rubber for the knobs account for the weight difference. Two completely different tires and applications. Closer comparison to the HR2 would be the DHR2: lighter across all wheel sizes.
The Ardent race is a more open Ikon, works better in soft conditions. That is within equivalent sizes. The 2.35 Ikon is a different beast, same as what the 2.4 Ardent is to the 2.25 Ardent: taller, more aggressive knobs with a larger volume casing to soften the blows.

I like to call the Ardent Race an Arkon. Good combo of Ikon and Ardent traits.
