Who's still running a monster T?

Yeah…yeah….old school and heavy….I know.

Might be picking up a Marz Monster T as a spare fork just for the hell of it. Seems like anyone that hasn't ridden one absolutely hates them…yet the owners love them. I come from a MX background and to me the beefier fork would be a bonus. Not to mention they sound indestructable..

For those that have actually ridden one..What can you tell me about them?? As I said…it would just be a spare fork…

The good forks (7" travel) were good forks. The bad forks were heavy.

02 was one of the best forks ever made imo. i still have an 01, but not on a bike at the moment. was thinking i might throw it on the hardtail sometime just for fun.

I never owned one but I've ridden them lots. Best fork for tracking and holding a line, no doubt, as well as just pointing down a hill and going for it through gnarl. Not the best at changing direction quickly though.

The fork I'm looking at is an '03 model so it's the heavy one. It would be a huge change as I'm currently running a Marz 888ATA which comes in at 7 pound. I find the front of the bike (09 Team DH) very light tho…

I'm kinda of a point and shoot rider so I'm thinking the pros almost outweigh the cons. I don't ride the skinnies or tech very much yet, but enjoy a bit of gnar and love the flowey fast runs and jumps. The wide stance and stability that WayneP mentions would be a definite pro…

So far the only drawback for my style of riding I see is the weight… and the fact it is 6 year old technology…

throw it on a fixie.

Being an agoraphobic adrenaline junkie would be pretty convenient, because you could get your rush from just going to the store to get some milk instead of having to jump off a mountain or out of an airplane.

Dont bother buying the 03 as a backup - it will basically make your bike unridable. The 01 and the 02 were good forks - the 02 had a better tune on it. Ive owned the heavy one and the nicer 01 version and still have my 01 as a backup. It is a pretty nice fork for its age - way too stiff though. If you need a backup you can probably find some older 888s for a similar price and they are a much more usable piece of equipment.

Also, I broke my 03(not riding it, just changing the oil) - the internals were not very well built IMO.

Yea don't get the '03 and up, those were junk. The older ones were decent (weight aside).

my buddy Rob B made the mistake of putting an 03 Monster on his Big Hit and took a couple of nasty "diggers" until he got used to the very heavy weight (12lb?)

the first digger he took was riding off the end of a ladder drop and did not compensate for the increase in weight compared to his previous fork (Marz. Junior T) and nose dived into the ground, banged his head splitting a Fox MX helmet in the process, concussion and sore head to say the least…

think he eventually found a sucker to swap the Monster for a 66 fork and was way happier…

the 02 Monster was a different prospect though, lovely fork whenever I had the pleasure to ride one on a buddies bike

if i had a choice between an 02 monster for about $250-$300 (what they typically go for now) and getting a new fox 40 at around 10 times the price i would not hesitate to go with the monster and spend the money i saved on hookers and blow.
