What's up with spoke prices?

My LBS is selling straigth 2.0 black spokes for $2.50 each. Those used to be 50cents with brass nipples. Now the nipples are sold separate.

I use prolock nipples. My LBS wants $2.50 per nipple. So $5 per spoke/nipple?  So $160 per wheel for spokes and nipples? Seriously?

I passed on that and sourced what I needed from ebay/jenson/dunbar/kissing crows. Got a much better deal. $29 for 100 prolock nipples (0.29 each). Got 100 spokes for $75.

So frustrating....

Spoke Service wheel building in Victoria shutdown their business due to the lack of wheel building parts availability. It just wasn't worth the struggle. Luckily they had another aspect to their business to refocus on, but that's a pretty harsh outcome for a business dealing with the COVID related parts supply problems that look like they'll drag on a into 2022 and beyond.

Damn, I was about to say that Ryan @ Spoke Service was the nicest guy to deal with and he had really fair prices. I bought spokes and nipples from him for my last 4 wheels and I wouldn't have bought them anywhere else ( I am in Quebec). I'm hoping he opens up business again later when the supply issues will be back to "normal".

I went to my lbs a couple of days ago and after pricing it out I said fuck it. I will ride this current wheel till it falls apart and likely buy a whole wheel.

May or may not be the same source, bike24 in Germany was my only source of individual Sapim spokes and nipples

Hmmmm... browsing you can't find j-bend spokes in there.  When I pull up my account, go to my order and click on the j-bend spoke line item it takes me to this link.

Not sure if they're out, or if that's just bugged.

While you're there, buy Magic Mary's for $55.  Also get the Shwalbe tire goop.  It's $15cad and as good as Stan's.  Looks like they're out of stock on 14mm ProLok nipples.  Koolstop brake pads must be made in the same place as shimano's, so if you have those, I'd load up on brake pads.

No options... 19.99eur flat fee.  Shipped via DHL Germany to Canadapost.

I'm about 50/50 on paying taxes and the $10 fee.  One of those no-tax times was with a $1300 mega order.

I got two boxes of 12mm prolock nipples from jenson. They were under 30 CAD each. It's worth looking on ebay for spokes. Sometimes you get lucky. If you are ok with silver, there are lots of deals on eBay.
